Starksboro man drowns while helping to save his son

FERRISBURGH — A 36-year-old Starksboro man died on Thursday morning, July 7, at the University of Vermont Medical Center as a result of a July 6 swimming incident while trying to rescue his son in the waters of Lake Champlain at Button Bay State Park.

Vermont State Police said Jason Russell died at around 4 a.m.

State police responded to Button Bay State Park at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving a call about a boy having trouble swimming.

Brandon gets $1.3 million grant to replace downtown culvert

BRANDON — The stormwater culvert planned for the Neshobe River in downtown Brandon is on the fast track for completion, thanks to Vermont’s congressional delegation.

In a press release issued Thursday, the offices of Sen. Patrick Leahy, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch announced a $1.3 million Hazard Mitigation Grant to the town from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The new grant will fund the construction phase of a culvert under Route 7 designed to divert floodwater from the Neshobe River.

Brandon dairy farmers fined for manure pit overflows

BRANDON — A Rutland Superior Court judge has ordered Brandon dairy farmers William and Robin Hanfield to fix an overflowing manure pit and pay a $24,750 fine for violating Vermont’s water pollution laws and agricultural practice regulations.

Snake Mountain’s “toe-tapping tunes combine the best of modern and traditional bluegrass,” according to Seven Days,with harmonies and songs that vary in tempo from “breakdown” to ballad. Agency of agriculture announces adjusted fee schedules

VERMONT — The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets (VAAFM) has announced its adjusted fee schedule, which has been approved by the legislature and went into effect July 1, 2016. The new fee schedule is available online at agriculture.vermont.gov/licensing-registration/fees.

West Nile Virus case confirmed in Windsor County

BURLINGTON — The Vermont Department of Health on July 1 confirmed the year’s first case of human illness due to West Nile virus. The Windsor County resident became ill in mid-June, and was diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease, a more serious form of the illness that affects the nervous system.

Moose permit applications due July 12

MONTPELIER — If you want to apply for a Vermont moose hunting permit, you need to enter the lottery no later than July 12.

 Lottery applications are on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department’s website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com), and printed applications are available at license agents statewide.

 A total of 135 regular moose season permits and 25 archery moose season permits will be issued for Vermont’s 2016 October moose hunt. The regular season will be Oct. 15-20, and the archery season is Oct. 1-7.

Time capsule found in cornerstone of old Middlebury town gym

MIDDLEBURY — Though it is being razed to oblivion, the old municipal gym at 94 Main St. continues to give up some secrets and surprises. The latest: A small time capsule that had been tucked into a cornerstone of the 1939 structure, which provided a recreational hub for generations of Middlebury-area students and adults.
