More than 100 rally to start a grocery co-op in Vergennes

VERGENNES — The owners of Vergennes grocery the Fat Hen, which offered locally grown and organic food, closed its doors on April 12. But an effort to re-create the business as a co-op could soon revive it as a downtown shopping option.

Mount Abe students lobby for plastic bag tax

BRISTOL — According to some number-crunching students at Mt. Abraham Union High School, the count of plastic bags that Vermonters use each year is staggeringly high — somewhere in the neighborhood of roughly 180 million bags, in fact.

“And that’s a conservative estimate,” said Mt. Abe physics teacher Tom Tailer.

Shard Villa to remain open for senior care

MIDDLEBURY — Two separate groups sparring over the future of Salisbury’s Shard Villa elder care home arrived at a court settlement on Monday that calls for the current board of directors to resign and for the installation of a new slate of leaders that will try to navigate the historic institution through some very choppy financial waters.

Grant to boost Middlebury waterfalls plan

MIDDLEBURY — A major effort aimed at upgrading access to, and enjoyment of, the Otter Creek Falls in downtown Middlebury received a huge boost on Thursday in the form of a $240,000 federal grant that will bankroll the vast majority of the project that borders the Marble Works Business District.

Selectmen consider $60K to conserve 16 acres near Middlebury River

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen are poised to release $60,000 from the town’s conservation fund to protect a 16-acre parcel bordering the Middlebury River, land that environmental advocates say could be critical in managing future flood events as well as in assuring access to swimmers, hikers and anglers.

Vermonters prepare for possible spread of swine flu

ADDISON COUNTY — As reported cases of the swine influenza cropped up around the country, Vermont remained unaffected at midweek by the airborne, contagious disease that reached epidemic proportions in Mexico. Still, local and state officials said they were on the lookout for the disease should it spread, and one local high school stepped up precautions after a student trip returned from south of the border last week.

Addison County gears up to 'Green Up"

ADDISON COUNTY — Captain Green Up will touch down in Middlebury on Friday once again, kicking off a flurry of spring cleaning around Addison County and throughout Vermont.

The super hero, clad in the telltale Green Up bags used to collect litter every year, will lead roughly 300 Middlebury-area middle school students through the streets.
