Atlatl championship to be held in Addison

ADDISON — The Chimney Point State Historic Site in Addison will offer a weekend of activities at the 21st Annual Northeast Open Atlatl Championship on Sept. 23-25, with workshops on Friday and Sunday and the competition on Saturday. The event is one of the highlights of September’s Vermont Archaeology Month.

Neat Repeats makes $19,000 in donations

ADDISON COUNTY — The volunteers at the Neat Repeats consignment shop on Bakery Lane in Middlebury have awarded $19,066 in the summer 2016 grant cycle, as follows:

Payments of $3,755 for family assistance to nine recipients, $3,750 to HOPE for housing solutions, $2,700 in scholarships to MAUHS, MUHS and VUHS, $2,000 in dental assistance for four recipients, $1,500 to Vermont Symphony Orchestra for school programs, $1,500 to Bridport Grange renovations,  $750 to Open Door Clinic for dental support.

Bureaucratic snafu almost costs pre-K providers

ADDISON COUNTY — An accord reached on Tuesday between the Vermont Agency of Education and the three Addison County school districts has defused what was looming as a significant financial hit for area parents and dozens of early education providers participating in the state’s new universal pre-K program.

At issue was a decision by Addison Central, Northeast and Northwest supervisory unions to delay implementation of the universal pre-K program, including payments to local providers.

Flutist brings popular music series to county

CORNWALL — Celebrated flutist Karen Kevra has always drawn a crowd, particularly when it comes to the popular Capital City Concerts (CCC) that have brought world-class chamber music to the Montpelier area since 2000. And like the legendary Pied Piper of Hamlin, Kevra is confident that CCC enthusiasts will follow her to the Middlebury area, which will now host some of the concerts thanks to her relocation to Cornwall.

Cornwall beef farmers expand onto conserved land

CORNWALL — Cheryl and Marc Cesario, farmers of Meeting Place Pastures, purchased 90 acres from their neighbor Matt Bonner, who had conserved the land with the Vermont Land Trust in order to make it more affordable to the Cesarios.

Cheryl and Marc moved to Cornwall in 2009 when they purchased their first property, also conserved with the Vermont Land Trust, to start their family business. Before that, Cheryl and Marc had been farming in separate locations, Cheryl on a dairy in South Hero, and Marc with livestock in Massachusetts.

New Addison Town Plan offering changes

ADDISON — A half-dozen Addison residents turned out on Monday night at Addison Central School to learn more about and comment on a proposed town plan that could lay the groundwork for new zoning laws.

Those laws, to be created only after the selectboard ultimately adopts a plan, could allow for smaller lots in the town’s biggest zoning district and create permanent regulations at the town level on solar arrays and windmills. The town now has interim regulations on the siting of solar arrays that the selectboard adopted in July.

Site visit ordered for New Haven solar array

NEW HAVEN — The Vermont Public Service Board hearing officer on the proposed Next Generation Solar Farm on Field Days Road has ordered a site visit, New Haven selectboard chair Kathy Barrett told her board at a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The site visit is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m.

Addison County literary magazine set to publish its first issue

VERGENNES — After receiving over one hundred individual submissions from across all towns in Addison County, “Zig Zag Lit Mag” is ready to release its first issue.

In celebration, the editing board has invited all those included in the inaugural issue to attend a release party as a chance to build relationships between local writers and artists. Zig Zag was founded to support these artists, and encourages their readers to do so as well with their motto: Read Local. Write Local.

Starksboro wants more dog licenses to prevent rabies
