Bristol hires part-time officer, eyes zoning regs

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard last week hired Bruce Nason as a new part-time officer for the Bristol Police Department.

Nason, a Bristol resident, has been a police officer for 22 years, 20 of those on the police force in Saranac Lake, N.Y., where he was chief for six and a half years. He came to the Addison County Sheriff’s Department in April 2015, and will continue to work full-time there as patrol supervisor.

He and his wife and youngest son moved to Vermont from New York state.

MUHS to perform 'Little Mermaid' this Friday-Sunday

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School this weekend will present a stage adaptation of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” — family friendly show.

More than 60 students have been working onstage and off since September to bring the musical’s memorable characters and high-energy songs and dances to life. The show is filled with the irresistible songs from the animated film, including “Under the Sea,” Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”

Mount Abe students to present 'Mary Poppins' this week

BRISTOL — Transforming words, music, movement, costumes and well-crafted design into a Mount Abraham Union High School fall musical has been an annual undertaking for the past 25 years or so. It depends upon the knowledge, talents and intentions of dozens of community members and parents, and the energies, drive and commitment of a hundred young people — and a storyline that compels and inspires creativity.

Local kids to take the stage with 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'

BRANDON — Everyone knows Roald Dahl’s classic story of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Perhaps the widespread, beloved reputation of this delicious tale is why it’s so fun to put a new spin on things.

In 1976, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book by Richard George was first published. Mr. George had adapted the story into a play, which Mr. Dahl readily approved.

Rotary offers time abroad to local students

MIDDLEBURY — High school students who want to expand their knowledge of another language and culture are invited to apply to Rotary International’s Foreign Youth Exchange program.

Students may choose an entire year abroad or a 3-week exchange in the summer of 2017. The application deadline is Dec. 1. Rotary values international exchanges and wants to make this opportunity available to all high school students in Addison County.

Thanksgiving egg hunt is this Wednesday

VERGENNES — To celebrate the season of sharing, Northlands Job Corps in Vergennes will host a Thanksgiving Egg Hunt Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. The event is at 100A MacDonough Drive in Vergennes.

It’s a fall celebration open to the broader community that blends old traditions with new and welcomes the entire family. Young and young at heart alike will enjoy games, hot chocolate and the turkey egg scavenger hunt (with goodies hidden inside).

WomenSafe offers services to those affected by sexual and domestic violence in Addison County

ADDISON COUNTY — WomenSafe, a Middlebury nonprofit, serves all the county’s victims of domestic and sexual violence, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, and works to end domestic and sexual violence in our community. (See featured story.)

Womensafe’s services include:

Clergy are 'first responders' to sexual, domestic violence

MIDDLEBURY — A group of local clergy members gathered last Tuesday for an all-day event at which they asked themselves how they could do more to end sexual and domestic violence and how they could better serve those who turn to them in an hour of need.

Museum pitched for old Bristol firehouse

BRISTOL — Since the Bristol Fire Department moved out of its dilapidated headquarters on North Street to take up residence in the brand new West Street fire station this past July, the classic 1897 firehouse has stood virtually empty.

But Bob Bernstein has a vision for turning the historic structure into a museum of 19th century New England woodworking machinery.
