Alpine Bingam lawsuit charges town office decision was 'unduly influenced'

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury man has filed a civil lawsuit against the town of Middlebury, Middlebury College, the Addison Independent and Bread Loaf Corp., alleging their collective actions “unduly influenced” the electorate prior to votes held earlier this year on a $6.5 million municipal building/recreation center project.

Mt. Abe seeks board member

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School Board is looking for a Bristol resident to fill a vacancy that has opened on the 13-member panel.

The vacancy was created after board member Amanda Fox resigned before the completion of her term, citing scheduling issues and her family’s plans to leave Bristol.

County to feature four House races and one primary

MIDDLEBURY — A primary runoff will be required to whittle down the Democrat candidates vying in the Addison-1 House district this November, while the county’s two incumbent state senators face no challengers in their re-election bids.

That’s just part of the 2014 election picture, which became clearer this week following the June 12 filing deadline for candidates vying for statewide offices as well as Vermont House and Senate seat and county offices.

Vergennes officials eyeing 9-cent hike in tax rate

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen are leaning toward a adopting a city budget that will call for a 9-cent increase in the municipal tax rate, of which 7 cents will pay for the Vergennes police station.

The new rate aldermen discussed on Tuesday and at their June 10 budget workshop is 72.5 cents, up from the current 63.5-cent rate that pays solely for city services, not for schools.

MIDDLEBURY — Jonah Lefkoe, president of Middlebury Union High School’s class of 2014, set the tone for the school’s graduation ceremony this past Saturday morning with his booming voice and infectious enthusiasm.

“In typical Vermont form,” he told his class, “we celebrate graduation on a dreary, overcast morning.”

VERMONT — For Lucy Edwards, earning the title of Miss Vermont 2014 meant more than wearing a tiara and sash. Edwards, a first-time contestant and a sophomore at the University of Vermont, was drawn to the Miss Vermont competition for its history of giving women a platform from which to champion the causes they were most passionate about.

First Vermont Gran Fondo seen as a success

ADDISON COUNTY — Organizers of the first annual Vermont Gran Fondo bicycling event this past Saturday say the event was a success and they plan to hold an even better event next year. The event drew 181 registrants. Of those, 160 starters pedaled their way through various cycling distances in and around Addison County on June 14, leaving organizers optimistic the event will have some staying power.

Bristol tractor-trailer crash snarls traffic

BRISTOL — A mid-afternoon tractor-trailer crash has snarled traffic in Bristol.

Just after 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, a tractor-trailer headed west on East Street (Route 116 west of the village) crossed the center line, crashed through the guard rail and rolled over, Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs said. No one was injured and no other vehicles were damaged in the accident.

Part of College Street in Middlebury will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury will close a portion of Route 125 (College Street) near Middlebury College next Tuesday and Wednesday. The stretch between Chateau Road and Hillcrest Road will be closed and completely impassable to vehicles from 6 a.m. on June 17 to 7 p.m. on June 18, in order to allow Middlebury College to replace a steam pipe crossing under the road.
