GERALD KEMP

NEW HAVEN — Gerald G. Kemp Sr., 87, of New Haven died on March 12, 2015, at Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at Riverside Cemetery in New Haven.

LEON ‘BUCKY’ SHACKETT

LEICESTER — Leon “Bucky” Ellsworth Shackett, 77, died early Monday, April 13, 2015, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury. He was a lifelong Leicester resident.

“Bucky” was born in Leicester on July 21, 1937. He was the son of Leon P. and Ethel (Swenor) Shackett. He grew up on the family farm. He received his early education in local Leicester schools, and graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1956. During his 4 years in high school he played catcher for the baseball team.

KIM SOULE

VERGENNES — Kim M. Soule died unexpectedly Monday, April 13, 2015, at her home in Vergennes.

She was born Jan. 22, 1961, in Windsor, Vt., the daughter of Edward and Christine (Austin) Fallon.

She graduated from Champlain College.

DAVID THIBODEAU

VERGENNES — At 11:25 a.m. on April 9, 2015, David I. Thibodeau, 71, took his last breath. His heartbeat slowed as we held him, and as he left us, we knew that after his yearlong battle with lung cancer he was at peace. Dave passed away at his home in Vergennes, VT, surrounded by his loving family and friends. It was a beautiful.

LOLA BENEDICT

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Lola Belle Benedict, 107, died March 20, 2015. She was born June 2, 1907, in Sheldon to Mable and Carlos Lawrence.

In 1937, she married Raymond Hezekiah Benedict, the son of Ransom and Lora Benedict who had a grocery store on Merchants Row in Middlebury.

JUSTINE BILLINGS

RIPTON — Justine Billings, age 77, died peacefully on April 8, 2015, at Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury, ending her brave struggle with full body inclusion myositis.

True to her Valentine’s birthdate (Feb. 14, 1938), she was loved by everyone who knew her. From simple acts of kindness, drama costumes, sewing and art lessons, to her love of nature, Justine touched many lives.

JUDITH BRODSKY

BRANDON — Judith Betty Brodsky, 84, of Brandon died Jan. 31, 2015, at Hebrew Home in Rockville, Md.

She was born in the Bronx, N.Y., on Nov. 25, 1930. She was the daughter of George and Anna (Hanser) Lipton. She grew up in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens, N.Y., where she received her early education. She graduated from Forest Hills High School in Queens, class of 1949. She earned her degree from Queens College, class of 1953.

CHARLES CHAPMAN

MIDDLEBURY — Charles B. Chapman, beloved husband of Evelyn D. Chapman, passed away in Middlebury, Vt., on April 9, 2015.

Born May 9, 1925, in Norwich, Conn., he was the son of the late Percival and Mildred (Packer) Chapman.

He was a United States Navy veteran.

ELIZABETH FILLIOE

FOREST DALE — Elizabeth Ann Fillioe, 84, of Forest Dale died Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at Rutland Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Waterbury on Feb. 26, 1931. She was the daughter of Frank and Caroline (Carpenter) Lamb. She grew up in Waterbury where she received her education in local schools.

On Sept. 4, 1955, she married James Henry Fillioe in Brandon. She had lived in Forest Dale since 1967, having moved there with her family from Germany, following her husband’s retirement from the military. He predeceased her on March 24, 2007.

NATHAN ALEXANDER

MIDDLEBURY — Nathan Joseph Alexander from Denver, Colorado, died on April 2, 2015, at age 20 in his dormitory room at Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont, where he was a sophomore. The cause of death was suicide.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
