THOR PETTERSEN

VERGENNES — Thor B. Pettersen, 90, of Vergennes died Friday, Feb. 26,from congestive heart failure.

He was born in New York City on Dec. 20, 1925, to Karen and Thoralf Pettersen. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and flew out of Italy on a B-17 as a nose gunner.

After the war Thor married his high school sweetheart, Mary Belski of Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1945 and lived in Brooklyn, Port Washington, and Mattituck, all on Long Island. They were married for 56 years.

EDMUND F. SULLIVAN

RIPTON — Edmund “Ed” F. Sullivan, 70, died Friday evening, Feb. 26, 2016. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer.

HARRY VAN TUYL JR.

MIDDLEBURY — Harry Edward Van Tuyl Jr. of Middlebury, Vt., died at Porter Hospital in Middlebury on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016. He was born on April 24, 1929, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., where his father, a regular Army officer, was stationed at the time.

JOHN ‘JACK’ BOUFFARD

MIDDLEBURY — John Francis Bouffard, known to all as Jack, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, died suddenly on Tuesday, Feb. 23, while on a fishing trip to Pulaski, N.Y. The cause of death was cardiac arrest. He was 67 years old.

HARRY VAN TUYL JR.

MIDDLEBURY — Harry Edward Van Tuyl Jr., 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, at Porter Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Van Tuyl.

A celebration of his life will be held onFriday, March 4, 2016, at 1 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. A reception will follow at the church.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — William James “Jim” OConnor, 72, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Middlebury, Vt., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016.

LINDA MALLOY

MIDDLEBURY— Linda M. Malloy, 62, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

She was born July 17, 1952, in North Ferrisburgh, the daughter of Walter H. Malloy Sr. and Hazel Stearns Malloy.

She enjoyed being with her dogs and cats and spending time knitting and crocheting.

JOSEPH PHILION

HARRISON, Tenn. — Joseph Eric Philion, 67, passed away in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Thursday, Feb. 18. Joe was a husband, father, “Grampy, father-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, friend and coach.

He was born Dec. 7, 1948, in Middlebury, Vt., to Joseph and Oneida (Nita) Philion and lived in Shoreham, Vt., until 8 years ago when he and his wife, Mary, relocated to the Chattanooga, Tenn., area.

GEORGE SHEA SR.

SUGARCREEK STATION, Pa. — George J. Shea, Sr., 81, formerly of Monkton, Vt., died Sunday night, Feb. 21, 2016, at Sugarcreek Station in Franklin, Pa.

He was born in Monkton on March 19, 1934, to the late George L. and Dorothy (Coates) Shea. 

He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 through 1954 during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion in Vergennes.

Mr. Shea was of the Catholic faith.

CHARLES STANTON

FERRISBURGH — Charles Peter Stanton, 73, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at his home in Ferrisburgh.

He was born Dec. 2, 2016, in Middlebury, the son of James and Edith Curler Stanton.

He worked for the city of Vergennes on the road crew. He enjoyed his tractors and loved animals.

Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, PO Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
