VIRGINIA HURD

VERGENNES — Virginia H. Hurd passed away Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Vergennes Residential Care in Vergennes.

She was born April 27, 1924, in Addison, the daughter of Frederick and Helen Hilton.

Virginia and Walter owned and operated a farm in Addison for many years. She loved going to the senior center and visiting with her friends and playing bingo. She resided at Valley View Apartments and recently moved to Vergennes Residential Care.

Predeceased by her husband Walter Hurd on Aug. 11, 2005.

She is survived by several cousins.

PAUL MAYER

MIDDLEBURY — Paul Emile Mayer, 90, of Middlebury, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 21, 2016. He was born March 18, 1926, in Casselman, Ontario, Canada, one of 10 children of Edmond and Elie-Anna Bourbonnais Mayer.

After coming to the United States when he was 3 years old, he attended schools in Cornwall, Bridport and Shoreham.

Paul married Genevieve James in June of 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury.

CLARENCE OWEN

BRISTOL — Clarence W. Owen, 69, passed away Monday, May 23, 2016, at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

He was born Jan. 15, 1947, in Bristol, the son of Claude and Ruth (Sargent) Owen.

He was president of Champlain Valley Flyers, ham radio operator and a mechanic for over 30 years, and worked at Burlington Subaru.

LISE PORT

ESSEX JUNCTION — Lise Marie (Charbonneau) Port left us on May 20, 2016, surrounded by family after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born Nov. 23, 1959, in Burlington, Lise spent most of her childhood in North Ferrisburgh, attending Ferrisburgh Central School, Vergennes High School and Rice Memorial High School. She was a very loving person who always worked hard and put her daughters on the top of her list.

WILLIAM RANDALL

RIPTON — William R. Randall, 55, of Ripton died May 18, 2016, at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pam Lackard, and their son, Joshua.

He was born June 1, 1960, in Rutland to Edna (Diane) Randall and the late Rodney Randall. He graduated from Middlebury Union High School in 1978.

He was predeceased by his niece, Danielle Lackard, and brother Tom.

BRISTOL — A memorial service for Franklin Delano Hier of Bristol, who died Oct. 18, 2015, will be held 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 6, at St. Ambrose Church in Bristol with a reception following the service in the basement of the church. ◊

THEODORE 'TAD' MANILA

BRISTOL — Theodore F. “Tad” Manila, 61, died Feb. 17, 2016. He was born and raised in Plainville, Conn., where he and the Buckler boys went from short pants to long trousers.

Tad was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Ruth (Newton) Manila; and his sisters, Anna Frances (Combs) Palmer (Mike), and Connie (Timms) Katzer.

DR. DONALD BALCH

UNDERHILL — Dr. Donald J. Balch, 93, passed away peacefully at the University of Vermont Medical Center on May 13. He was born in Hanover, N.H., on July 15, 1922. He was the son of Ralph and Mareta Balch.

THELMA “TUCK” DENETT

BRIDPORT — A beautiful smile and earthly light was extinguished on May 17, 2016, when Thelma Ruth (Beers) Denett departed peacefully from her home in Bridport. We are heartbroken and console ourselves that an angel is now watching over us ’til we are reunited.

Thelma was born in Hampton, N.Y., on Sept. 15, 1925, to Thomas Ross Beers and Thelma Evelyn Collins. She was a strong, hardworking woman that married Richard Victor Denett Sr. on Dec. 4, 1944, in Troy, N.Y. Later they ran a dairy farm in Bridport, Vt., where her door was always open to visiting family.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
