GEORGE BAKER

SHOREHAM — George M. Baker Jr., 88, of Shoreham, passed away after a brief illness on Feb. 7. Mr. Baker was born in Shawnee, Okla., in 1927 and raised there and in Murray, Ky.

He was a paratrooper in the Pacific during the Second World War, was in the Army of Occupation in Japan thereafter, and served again during the Korean War.

LORRETTE BOURGEOIS

VERGENNES — A celebration of life for Lorrette T. Bourgeois will be held on the day her story began, her birthday. Sixty-eight years later, her chapter ends on Monday, Feb. 29,at 2 p.m. at Saint Peter’s Parish Hall in Vergennes.

Please join us with a story or two and a dish to share.

A memorial Mass will be at 6 p.m. ◊

FRANCIS HOWLAND

NEW HAVEN — Francis B. Howland, 95, of New Haven, a 50-year Vergennes resident, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Porter Medical Center.

He was born in Brandon on Dec. 4, 1920, the youngest son of the late Frank and Bertha (Wisell) Howland. He attended local schools and retired after 20 years of service from Middlebury College in the maintenance department.

He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline (Carr) Howland, on March 8, 1998.

DOUGLAS LATREILLE

BRIDPORT— Douglas S. Latreille, 65, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at Vermont Respite House in Williston.

He was born July 21, 1950, in Middlebury, the son of Leonard and Beverly Douglas Latreille.

Douglas graduated from Mount Abraham High School in Bristol. He retired from Vermont Army National Guard and was a member of American Legion Post 27 in Middlebury. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends.

ALMERINDA ‘RITA’ RUSSO

LEICESTER — Almerinda “Rita” Russo, age 90, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at her home in Leicester.

Mrs. Russo was born in Jamaica, Long Island, N.Y., on Sept. 17, 1925. She was the daughter of Alfred and Antoinette (Nunziatta) Buonincontro.

She graduated from Hempstead (N.Y.) High School, class of 1943. Following graduation she worked for Republic Air Craft in Farmingdale, N.Y. Nov. 20, 1948, she married Vincent “Vince” Russo. They made their home in Hempstead, N.Y., and later in Wantagh, N.Y.

PHYLLIS SIMMONS

PLAISTOW, N.H./Middlebury, Vt. — Phyllis A. (Keezer) Simmons, 83, a longtime resident of Plaistow and former resident of Middlebury, died on Jan. 26, 2016, in Haverhill.

She was born Oct. 3, 1932, in Haverhill and raised in Middlebury, Vt. She graduated in 1950 from Middlebury High School, and in 1954 from Middlebury College with a BS in biochemistry.

She is survived by three children, including son Bradford and Connie Simmons of Whiting.

MIDDLEBURY — Harvey Crocker Smith of Middlebury died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. He was born July 11, 1933, in Boston, Mass.

CONSTANCE LILLY

WEYBRIDGE — Constance “Connie” Lilly passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, surrounded by her family.

Connie was born on Oct. 29, 1934, to Harold and Nellie Hughes. She attended schools in Granville, N.Y., and Orwell and Pittsford, Vt.

PETER RHEAUME

SALISBURY — Peter A. Rheaume (“Two Shoes”), 66, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016, at his home in Salisbury.

He was born on Oct. 14, 1949, in Burlington to Leonard and Harriet (Blaise) Rheaume. Pete grew up in Vergennes surrounded by his very large family. He had fond memories of his mother’s restaurant and helping his big brothers with odd jobs. Pete joined the U.S. Navy in 1968.

Peter married the love of his life, Diane (Rivers), on Oct. 3, 1975. Together they had two daughters, Danielle and Casey.

LORRETTE BOURGEOIS

PANTON — Lorrette T. Bourgeois’s story began in Chittenden County, Vt., on Feb. 29, 1948, the beloved daughter of Leo and Lucille Tromblay. After graduating from Essex High School, Lorrette continued her education at Fanny Allen Memorial School of Practical Nursing where she became an LPN.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
