Robert Porter

FERRISBURGH — Robert D. Porter, 63, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, at Gage Cemetery in Ferrisburgh. Memorial contributions may be made to Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, PO Box 11, Vergennes, VT 05491.

He was born April 30, 1947, in Windsor, the son of Kenneth and Jeanne (Phelps) Porter.

Alma Plummer

VERGENNES — Alma Marie Plummer, 90, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at the Helen Porter Nursing Home.

A Catholic funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes, 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 11, Vergennes, VT 05491.

Born and raised in Vergennes, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Mary (Gee) Barrows. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the St. Ann’s Society.

Robert Orth

BURLINGTON — Robert M. Orth died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at his home in Burlington.

There will also be a celebration service and releasing of ashes on Oct. 1 at the Lake Mansfield Trout Club, Moscow, Vt., with the time and details to be announced.

Marge Fenner

SHELBURNE — Marge (Duclos) Gibeault Fenner, 85, of Shelburne died Aug. 31, 2010.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church in Shelburne.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or to the Porter Hospital building fund, South St., Middlebury, VT 05753.

She was born in Bristol, the daughter of Alfretta and Esdram Duclos.

She graduated from the DeGoesbriand Hospital School of Nursing Cadet Corps in 1946.

Sally Beck

BRANDON — Sally Lou Beck, 77, of Brandon died Sept. 7, 2010, at Helen Porter Nursing Home after a short battle with kidney cancer.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Rutland. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Brandon.

Memorial contributions may be made to Helen Porter Nursing Home, Recreation Fund, Porter Drive, Middlebury, VT 05753, or the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

Florence O'Connor

BRISTOL — Florence M. (Grapes) O’Connor, 95, more often known as “Bonnie,” passed away Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at Vermont Respite House in Williston.

Burial will be at convenience of her family in Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Middletown, Conn.

She was born July 16, 1915, in Lyndonville, the daughter of Ernest and Margaret (Nutbrown) Grapes.

She was a registered nurse and worked at Brightlook Hospital in St. Johnsbury. She moved to Connecticut in 1939 and worked there in various hospitals and industrial plants until her retirement.

Beatrice Gerow

RIPTON — Beatrice M. Dayton Gerow, a longtime resident of Ripton, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at her home.

A private family service was conducted at Ripton Community Church with Rev. Jill Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Cook Cemetery.

Friends and family were invited to a reception at her home Saturday, Sept. 4.

Born in Middlebury July 30, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Murtie Bell (King) Dayton.

R. Bernard Alexander

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. — R. Bernard “Bernie” Alexander, 92, passed away Aug. 11, 2010.

Services and burial were private.

Survivors include his son, Steve Alexander and wife Kathy of North Ferrisburgh; his daughter Polly Alexander of Essex Junction; his daughter Joan Leonhardt and husband Bob of Ardsley-on-Hudson, N.Y.; his grandchildren, David Leonhardt and wife Laura of Washington, D.C., Robin Peterson and husband Eric of Denver, Colo., Tyler Nash of Essex Junction, and Maria, Jackson, and Daisy Alexander of North Ferrisburgh; and four great-grandchildren.

BRISTOL — Robert “Bobby” Fuller, 51, died suddenly at Fletcher Allen Health Care surrounded by family and loved ones on Aug. 29, 2010.

A service will be held Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at 1 p.m. in Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol, with burial to follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol. Family and friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol on Thursday, Sept. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m.

He was born in Burlington on May 3, 1959, to Robert and Ramona (Parker) Fuller.

MaryLou Chatfield

SUDBURY — MaryLou Chatfield, 74, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, with her family by her side, at her home in Sudbury.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Brandon. The Rev. Margaret Fletcher, rector, will officiate. A private burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon on Friday, Sept. 3, from 6-8 p.m.

She was born in Cornwall, N.Y., on Sept. 9, 1935. She was the daughter of Morton and Mary (O’Dell) Henderson.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
