James Hopkins

KODIAK, Alaska/
VERGENNES, Vt. — James A. Hopkins, 41, of Vergennes died April 12, 2012.

He was born April 17, 1970, in Middlebury, Vt., the son of William and Simone (Litch) Hopkins. He graduated from Vergennes Union High School in 1988 and attended Johnson State College for two years. He joined the Navy in 1990 and later transferred to the Coast Guard in 2002.

Evangelyn Johnson

BRISTOL — Evangelyn Duncan Johnson died Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Helen Porter care home at the age of 90 after many years suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Bruce Sturtevant

NEW HAVEN — Bruce Francis Sturtevant, 44, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

He was born June 23, 1967, in Middlebury, the son of the late Francis and Margaret (Durkee) Sturtevant.

He is survived by two sons, Jason and Bradley Sturtevant of New Haven; stepson Devin Moulton of Rutland; a sister, Lisa Sturtevant and husband Michael Poirier of New Haven; two nieces, Jessica Sturtevant of North Ferrisburgh and Tarah Poirier of New Haven; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Nancy Willstatter

LANTANA, Fla. — Nancy Willstatter, 91, of Lantana, died June 4, 2012, at her home.
She was born July 22, 1920, in New York City. She earned a BA at Agnes Scott College in 1941 and an MA at Manhattanville College in 1972.
She was an active member of the community, as a hospital volunteer, in a foreign exchange students program, and in a women’s club. Her family says she was an enthusiast of the arts and culture, travel and golf. She was an active supporter of the Middlebury College Museum of Art.

Doris Brisson

SHOREHAM — Doris (Wimett) Brisson passed away on Friday, June 1, 2012, at home after a long illness.

She was born on Dec. 2, 1928, in Bridport, the daughter of Ernest and Ethel (Nadeau) Wimett.

Doris graduated from Middlebury High and became a hairdresser.

She married the love of her life, Robert Brisson, in 1953. Together they ran a dairy farm in Shoreham and had three children of whom she was very proud.

In her later years, she became a prolific painter. She loved her family, cooking, her home, border collies and birds.

Vera Cota

STARKSBORO — Vera Arlene Cota, 94, of Starksboro died peacefully on Sunday, June 3, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington surrounded by her children.

She was born Jan. 12, 1918, in South Starksboro, the daughter of Percy and Mildred Tarte Shepard. She was a lifelong resident of Starksboro.

Donald Dayton

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Donald Roy Dayton Sr. of Vero Beach, Fla., a World War II veteran, died Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, at Indian River Medical Center following a short illness. He was 86.

Don was born in 1925, the only son and youngest child of the late Roy Leslie Dayton and Myrtie Belle (King) Dayton. Raised in Middlebury, Vt., Don dropped out of Middlebury High School at age 17 to be part of the fighting effort of WW II. He served in the Pacific Theatre as a navy cook for the duration of the war.

George Kilbourn

BRISTOL — George Lewis “Sonny” Kilbourn of Bristol died Nov. 8, 2011, at Starr Farm Home after a yearlong battle against liver cancer.

Born in Newburgh, N.Y., Jan. 7, 1929, he was the only son of Marie McTamany and Dr. George Lewis Kilbourn DDS, and grandson of Mary Emma Laroque and Arthur Barlow Kilbourn.

Dean Leonard

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Dean A. Leonard, 91, of South Burlington died on Monday, June 4, 2012, at his home.

From the early age of 8, Dean’s head was always in the clouds. He had just taken his first flight at Rock’s Flying School in Bristol. At every opportunity he took to the skies. By the age of 20, he had earned his civilian pilot’s license.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
