WARREN WITHERELL

MIDDLEBURY — Warren Witherell passed peacefully near Middlebury on May 26, surrounded by family, friends, poetry readings and lilacs. He was 79 years old.

He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1956 and founded Burke Mountain Academy in 1971, where he served as headmaster, English teacher and coach. He promoted the innate ability of student-athletes to thrive and learn in a non-graded and physically active school. Through his coaching, over 115 students and alumni of the school have been named to the U.S. Ski Team, and 43 to Olympic teams.

LYNN C. HUESTIS

SHOREHAM — A burial service for Lynn C. Huestis of Colchester who died Dec. 17, 2013, will be conducted at noon on Friday, June 13, 2014, at St. Genevieve Cemetery in Shoreham, with the Rev. William R. Beaudin officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Vermont National Guard Military Funeral Honor Guard of Colchester.

Family and friends are welcome.

SYBLE "WALLY" ENGLE

BRANDON — Syble “Wally” Walterene Engle, 84, died Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at her home in Brandon.

She was born in Houston, Miss., on Nov. 17, 1929. She was the daughter of Lex Byron and Alma Maie (Weed) Wilson. She grew up in Houston where she received her early education and was a 1947 graduate of Houston High School. Following her graduation she struck out touring the United States.

KENNETH WARING HEWITT JR.

BRISTOL — Kenneth Waring Hewitt Jr., aka “Jay,” took his final breath here on earth with loving family by his side on Saturday, May 24, 2014, and his first breath in heaven for eternity after a valiant battle with Mantle Cell Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was born May 12, 1950, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., to Kenneth Waring Hewitt and Elizabeth (Kennedy) Hewitt and spent most of his childhood in Binghamton, N.Y.

HELEN KAPITAN

BRANDON — Helen Ardella Kapitan, 88, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Gill Odd Fellow Home in Ludlow where she had resided since 2005.

She was born March 18, 1926, in Brandon, the daughter of Dwight and Bessie (Rickert) Walker. She resided all of life in Brandon until moving to the Gill Odd Fellow Home. She graduated from Brandon High School and married George Kapitan II in 1955.

She was a beautician and operated the Peter Pan Beauty Shop in Brandon until retiring in 2005. She was a member of the Brandon United Methodist Church. ?

LORETTA DEGRAY

MIDDLEBURY — The graveside committal service and burial for Loretta Alice DeGray, 77, who died Jan. 22, 2014, will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at noon, at Prospect Cemetery in East Middlebury.

The Rev. William Beaudin, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury, will officiate.

RICHARD JACKSON

CHICHESTER, N.H. —  Richard “Bud” Jackson, 76, formerly of Addison County, died May 8, 2014. The committal service will be held on June 7, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Mayville family plot in the Leavitt Cemetery, located at the corner of Horse Corner Road and Lane Road in Chichester, N.H.

Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Nassau Humane Society, 671 Airport Road, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034. Cards and acknowledgments may be sent to David Jackson, 50 Clement Road, Allenstown, N.H. 03275.

CHARLES JOHNSON

LEICESTER —Charles Ellsworth Johnson, age 81, died April 25, 2014, in Brooksville, FL.

Charlie was born in Leicester on Feb. 17, 1933. He was the son of Joseph E. “Pinky” Johnson and Hildred (Dow) Johnson-Larkin. He was a graduate of Brandon High School, class of 1952. He afterwards attended Randolph Agriculture School. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1953 and was stationed at Annapolis, Md., working in the Naval Justice Department, and later as a weapons instructor for the Navy’s Mid-Shipmen.

HELEN KAPITAN

BRANDON — Helen Ardella Kapitan, 88, formerly of Brandon, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Gill Odd Fellow Home in Ludlow.

A graveside committal and burial service will be conducted Friday, May 30, 2014, at 3 p.m. in Holman Cemetery in Salisbury. The Revs. Kathleen and Ken Bevin of the Brandon United Methodist Church will conduct the service. There are no calling hours.

A full obituary will appear in a future edition of the Addison Independent.

MICHAEL LUCIA

LINCOLN — Michael E. Lucia of Lincoln passed away unexpectedly at his home Sunday, May 25, 2014. He was the son of Noble and Marjorie (Hallock) Lucia.

He married his high school sweetheart Francene Masterson on May 2, 1980. Together they made a home in South Lincoln and raised two children, daughter Michelle and son Justin. Michael loved working with wood and refinishing furniture, fishing with family, hiking, camping and being outdoors. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle and friend.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
