JOHN A. PHILLIPS III

LACEY’S SPRING, Ala. — John A Phillips III of Lacey’s Spring, Ala., passed away peacefully at his home on June 19, 2015, at the age of 81, with his family by his side. His battle with Alzheimer’s finally came to an end.

He was born June 9, 1934, in Middlebury, Vt., and was the son of John A. and Joy Phillips.

ARTHUR STONE SR.

FAIR HAVEN — Arthur Lemen Stone Sr., 83, died Friday, July 3, 2015, at his home in Fair Haven.

He was born in Brandon on July 20, 1931. He was the son of Parker and Arlene (Smith) Stone Sr. He grew up in Brandon and received his early education in local Brandon schools.

OLIVE BABCOCK

BRISTOL — Olive Evelyn Babcock, 89, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

She was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Bristol, the daughter of Harold and Mildred (Allen) Carpenter.

Her husband, George Babcock, predeceased her on March 8, 1997.

Olive is survived by her sister, Marie Noyes of Bristol, and several nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by two brothers, Donald and Robert Carpenter.

JOHN LENK

FERRISBURGH, Vt./SUPPLY, N.C. — A graveside service for John P. Lenk, 96, who died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at his home in Supply, N.C., will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, at Lake View Cemetery in West Addison.

MARY SUE BROWN

BRISTOL — Mary Sue Brown passed away peacefully at the caring nursing home of Wayne and Emily Rainey of Salisbury, Vt., with her family at her side.

She was born in Success, Ark., on Nov. 24, 1919, the daughter of J.O. and Lelia Smith.

She graduated from Corning (Ark.) High School and directly went to work in Piggott, Ark. for several years at the Triple A office, which was known as the Agriculture Adjustment Administration, a needy farm project setup during World War II. She was connected with the insurance program.

JUSTIN CLAYTON

PORTLAND, Ore. — Justin Adrain Clayton, 25, son of Sharon Lykins-Brown and Ben Brown of Sharon, died June 24, 2015, in a car accident. He and his beloved Anna were on their way to the Columbia Gorge in Washington, with work friends. In this tragic moment, he and Anna stopped moving forward in time.

MARIE HIER

BRISTOL — Marie Lucia Hier, 79, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2015, at the Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Memory Care Unit in Middlebury.

She was born Aug. 29, 1935, in Bristol, the daughter of John Lucia and Dorothy (King) Lucia.

Her relatives say she enjoyed fishing and turkey hunting with her husband. She also got pleasure from family, holidays (especially Christmas), gardening, reading, music, crafts and Victorian dollhouses. Her family says they will remember her most for her phenomenal cooking skills.

WILLIAM KERSHAW JR.

MIDDLEBURY — William E. “Bill” Kershaw Jr. of Middlebury died peacefully on June 13, 2015. He was 91.

He was born Aug. 30, 1923, in Philadelphia and was raised in the area until World War II.

In 1942 he joined the U.S. Army Signal Corps and served until the end of the War. He was educated at Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University and Stanford, obtaining a BA in electrical engineering in 1948.

CARROLL RIKERT JR.

ITHACA, N.Y. — Treasurer emeritus Carroll Rikert Jr., who worked at Middlebury College from 1952 to 1983, died on June 12, 2015, in Ithaca, N.Y. at age 97.

He was born in Greenfield, Mass., on March 31, 1918, and was raised on the campus of Mount Hermon School, where his father was the director of the physical plant. He attended Mount Hermon, Harvard College, and Harvard Business School, and enlisted as an ensign in the United States Navy during World War II.

BARBARA ROBERTS

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Barbara Ann (Russell) Roberts died April 9, 2014, at her home in Melbourne, Fla.

She was born Jan. 13, 1942, in Bridport, the daughter of Harold and Christine (Scuderi) Russell.

She worked as a Cottage Parent for Weeks School in Vergennes then for the State of Vermont Health Department retiring after 20 years of service. Barbara and her husband spent many summers at Apple Island Resort.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Ralph Chase.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
