FRANCIS SUMNER

BRISTOL — Francis Ralph Sumner, 80, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

He was born July 6, 1933, in Bristol, the son of George and Alma (Naylor) Sumner.

He was a truck driver and spent 13 years driving school bus for Bet-Cha Transit. He was a member of Bristol American Legion Post 19 and was a past commander. He was a member of Libanus Masonic Lodge No. 47 in Bristol and past patron of Order of Eastern Star Libanus Lodge Chapter No. 47. His family says he loved to travel and go camping.

Tammi Goddard

MIDDLEBURY — Tammi Goddard, born Anne Ruth Thompson on May 5, 1946, was raised by her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Ruth (Figge) and Thomas E. Thompson, in Detroit, Mich. She graduated from Detroit Central High School during the height of the Civil Rights Movement and was proud to be the only white girl in the June 1964 class of 400. Many deep, enduring friendships were formed there.

RICHARD F. BILLINGS SR.

MIDDLEBURY — Richard F. Billings Sr., 87, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 4, 2013, at his residence in Middlebury.

He was born July 10, 1926, in Proctor, the son of the late Fredrick and Rita (Whittemore) Billings.

A graduate of Middlebury High School, class of 1943, he married Joyce Vera Lee in April of 1951. He served in the United States Army’s 43rd Division in Germany during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Middlebury American Legion Post 27. He retired as a mechanic from Champlain Construction in 1990.

CHARLES WILLIAM “BILL” PAINE

NEW HAVEN — Charles William “Bill” Paine died on Feb. 5, 2014, from a brief yet difficult battle with cancer.

He worked as a radio broadcaster and in several other capacities for the Department of Agriculture.

JOHN F. SHEPARD

BRISTOL — John F. Shepard, 50, of Bristol died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 16, 1963, in Middlebury, the son of Charles and Rosamond Smith Shepard. He served in the United States Marine Corps. He worked as a truck driver, most recently for Livingston Farm and Landscape.

BRISTOL — Loretta “Cookie” Annette (Cook) Rheaume, born May 19, 1937, in Hubbardton, Vt., passed away in her home in Bristol on Feb. 4, 2014, following a long illness.

DANIEL IVAN STEADMAN SR.

BRISTOL — Daniel Steadman, 77, of Bristol passed away Feb. 5, 2014, at Fletcher Allen Hospital after a long illness. Dan was born Nov. 7, 1936, in Lincoln, the son of William Lee Steadman and Ruth (Hanmer) Steadman, who predeceased him.

BRANDON — Christopher Allen Bruce, 29, of Brandon died Feb. 1, 2014, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center. He was born on June 10, 1984, in Middlebury, the son of Eugene and Pamela Bruce Jr.

HELEN M. KRAMPITZ

MIDDLEBURY — Helen M. Krampitz, 97, died Thursday evening, Jan. 30, 2014, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

She was born Dec. 12, 1916 in Middlebury, the daughter of the late Wesley and Sadie (Williams) Murdock.

She was a graduate of Middlebury High School.

She was a bookkeeper for the family business Murdock Fuels. She was a member of the Bristol American Legion Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Essex. Her family says she was also an avid golfer and bowler.

JOHN SHEPARD

BRISTOL — John Shepard, 50, of Bristol died at home on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, after a long illness.

Calling hours will be Friday, Feb. 7, 6-8 p.m. at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol.

Services will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m. at the Bristol American Legion, with burial to follow at Mount St. Joseph Cemetery in Bristol.

A full obituary will appear in a future edition of the Independent.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
