Jessie Raymond: Painting proves to be a job with no end

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

It wasn’t supposed to be this complicated.

My husband has been working on our house, and it was time for me to do my part: the painting. It’s not because I’m the better painter; it’s because I hate painting slightly less than he does, and because it’s the only renovation-related work I can help with.

Ways of Seeing: Don't forget the faces of war and children

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Johanna Nichols

A Letter to Omran, September 12, 2016

I remember the poster from 1967of a sunflower on yellow background with the simple words “War is not healthy for children and other living things.” It became a logo for the organization Another Mother for Peace. It comes to mind when I look at a newspaper clipping posted on my refrigerator.

Victor Nuovo on Spinoza: The Passions

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s note: This is the seventh in a series of essays on Dutch philosopher Benedict Spinoza.

I begin with a reminder of some themes from the previous essays. According to Spinoza, Nature is the only thing that can rightfully be said to exist, because it depends on no other thing but itself, whereas whatever else there is depends on it and inheres in it. It is the only substance; all other things are modes or finite modifications of it, just as a simple tune or a symphony are modes of music, not the thing itself.

Opinion: 'Black Lives Matter' movement has solid reasoning

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Mary Kay Schueneman

Black Lives do Matter. While scrolling through my Facebook feed, I came across the report from WCAX that the Black Lives Matter Flag recently raised at the University of Vermont Campus by the Student Government was stolen during the night of Sept. 24. This is disturbing. But what is more deeply disturbing is the array of racist and intolerant comments made on the WCAX link to the story.

Opinion: Learning a lesson from Finland

Posted on September 29, 2016 |

Finland is a star in the educational world. To catch up on Finland’s work, I was recently reading Pasi Sahlberg’s book on the Finnish education system, titled “Finnish Lessons 2.0: What Can the World Learn from Educational Change in Finland?”

Opinion: Immigration and population grown are intertwined

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By David Van Vleck

Immigration And Population Growth

“Immigration” is the main reason Britons are leaving the E.U.; “Immigration” is also the main concern of Americans supporting Trump. “Immigration” is a natural concern for any nation that wishes to control its future. The U.S. used to allow 400,000 immigrants annually; that number has increased drastically to an unknown level, unknown because of the many illegals involved.

Opinion: Minter helped improve Vt. railroads

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Herb Russell

As a proud rail supporter and founder of Friends of Rutland Rail, the group formed to save the Western Corridor’s Ethan Allen Amtrak service, I ask that you support Sue Minter for governor. Sue worked diligently, with vision as Transportation Secretary toward completion of funding the Western Rail Corridor, which will connect our Amtrak Ethan Allen train from Rutland to Middlebury to Burlington.

Opinion: Trump could be 'babbler in chief'

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Alec Lyall

The Importance Of Being Babble

Babble, verb and noun — to utter meaningless sounds; rubbish, muddle, prattle, blather, drivel, nonsense, bull, gibberish.

According to an independent source, I’m good at babble, although being good at something that is generally considered bad could be oxymoronic.

Opinion: Ayer deserves another term

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Kate Wagner MD

I am writing in support of Claire Ayer’s run for the Vermont State Senate. I have known Sen. Ayer for over six years, during which time her compassion and intelligence have allowed her to make progress toward improving health care reform as the Chair of the committee on Health and Welfare and Health Reform Oversight Committee.

Opinion: A piece of history goes up in flames

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Sanford Rouse

A national treasure gone up in flames! Why? Why? Why?

The Cornwall-Salisbury Covered Bridge connected the towns for people to travel to work for many years. It also made it lot easier for a lot of farmers in the surrounding areas to work and made their fields of crops more accessible for them to tend.

The bridge was built in 1865 when Abe Lincoln was our 16th president of the U.S.; a great piece of history cannot be denied.
