Victor Nuovo: Lucretius on Civilization and its Discontents

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Victor Nuovo

Nuovo,Victor1754.jpg

Editor’s note: This is the 11th in a series of essays on Lucretius, an early philosopher who provides a link to “lost classics” through his epic poem “On the Nature of Things.”

Lucretius supposed that the human species is exceptional in one way only: we are, compared to other animals, ill prepared for life. It is left to us to find ways to achieve security and comfort; the product of our efforts is civilization.

Jessie Raymond: Trip plans hinged on luck of the Irish

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

In 2019, my husband Mark and I will reach a milestone: our 25th wedding anniversary. I want to celebrate with a trip.

It’s early yet, but I thought I’d better spring the idea on him sooner rather than later so (a) we’d have time to save up for this adventure, and (b) he could get used to the idea of leaving his Addison County comfort zone.

I want to go to Ireland.

Gregory Dennis: Phoning from the Land of Enchantment

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

When did everybody suddenly own a smart phone? We’ve gone from a world in which people sat and talked with one another to a world in which we sit side-by-side, ignoring each other and staring at our phones.

This may actually represent progress. Before we could access the interwebs on our phone, every mobile user seemed to think they were required to communicate by speaking loudly at all times — “cell yell,” they called it.

Opinion: Universal care system favored

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Walter Carpenter

The letter “Vermont must address health insurance conundrum” (Addison Independent, April 11, 2016) was right on. This health insurance conundrum cannot be repeated enough. Our wages can never keep up with the never-ending rise of health care costs, no matter how high we raise the minimum wage. That “Of the roughly 630,000 people living in Vermont, almost 40 percent of them are on some form of public health care,” as the letter said, plainly shows this losing battle.

Opinion: With care, ANeSU can move to unification

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Rep David Sharpe

Regarding K-12 education, the Legislature was faced with several concurrent challenges. We have lost roughly 20 percent of our K-12 population and we heard quite clearly from taxpayers that property taxes were too high. At the same time we know that we need to prepare our students for a future where they are not just in competition with other Vermonters for jobs, they are also competing with students across the globe. In particular, we don’t do well by our students from low-income homes, and our costs for special education are high.

Opinion: Town, Diversified Occupations partnership is welcomed

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Shelley Payne

Today while I was at the Middlebury Parks and Recreation’s new facility on Creek Road, I noticed that the Hannaford Career Center’s Diversified Occupations students were doing all of the plantings of the new trees and lawn surrounding the new building. I knew one of the teachers and students helping so I went over to say hello.

Editorial: Bernie's gift to Democrats hangs on Hillary's response

Posted on May 4, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

What if Sen. Bernie Sanders wins the remaining primary races? Or even all but a few?

Would that late surge shift the perception of Hillary Clinton’s inevitability as the Democrat’s presumptive candidate? Would it shift the hearts and minds of the Superdelegates in the one single calculus that is supposed to be their raison dêtre: supporting the candidate they think stands the best chance of beating Republican front-runner Donald Trump?

Editorial: GOP’s doomsday; Kasich’s insight

Posted on May 4, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

For many Republicans, Tuesday was doomsday. What no one thought possible just nine months ago — when real estate billionaire Donald Trump entered the race among 17 other Republican leaders — came to pass. Presidential nominee Donald Trump trounced Texas Senator Ted Cruz in the Indiana primary, prompting Cruz, and, hours later, candidate John Kasich, to drop out of the race. The candidate who once was considered a joke, who’s candidacy was a commercial farce meant to build up his personal brand, has bested the best of the Republican leadership.

Opinion: State's secret solar deal trumped New Haven research

Posted on May 2, 2016 |

The permitting process for solar sites used to be a long and time-consuming process until the Vermont Department of Public Services hit upon a brilliant scheme for cutting their workload precisely in half: They listen to only one side.
