Opinion: Towns unfairly have bug liability

Posted on July 23, 2015 |
By Thomas Vanacore

In response to your July 16, 2015, coverage of mosquito control: State administrative policy governing mosquito control is based on what seems to be a fundamental flaw. On the one hand the state has claimed jurisdiction and authority over “waters of the state,” while on the other hand liabilities issuing from those same waters such as mosquito control have been laid squarely on the shoulders of the locals.

Opinion: Corporate ‘hush money’ undermining state politics

Posted on July 23, 2015 |
By Fred Person

I ponder about core values and wisdom which surrounds how our legislation brings bills into law.

The “steroid” RESET program, which is replacing the Renewables Energies SPEED program now, is law only because of the support of having gun silencers manufactured in Vermont, which has not been done since the Al Capone Days.

Silencing!

“Do what they (corporations) tell you to do!” The voice of a fearful friend.

Guest Editorial: State pushes for better ROI info on higher education

Posted on July 23, 2015 |
By Emerson Lynn

Historically, the Vermont Legislature has used the number of full-time equivalent students to determine how much money to appropriate for the University of Vermont and the Vermont State College system. This enrollment-based funding model has been standard practice here and in most states.

That model is being rethought. As of the first of the year, 30 states have decided to move to a performance-based funding system that pegs at least a portion of the allocation to how well the students do, at what costs, and over what period of time.

Editorial: Fast-tracked out of $100,000

Posted on July 20, 2015 |
By Emerson Lynn

On May 20, when the governor, House Speaker Shap Smith and Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger awarded the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce $100,000 to strengthen economic ties with Quebec, little did they know that “fast-tracking” something would prove so controversial.

That’s what happens when the fast-tracing process also avoids the normal legislative requirements of transparency. Mistakes are made and everyone is put in an awkward position.

Community forum: Vermont leads a climate summit of Americans

Posted on July 20, 2015 |
By Gov. Peter Shumlin

Last week I traveled to Toronto to attend the Climate Summit of the Americas, which brought together Pan-American governmental, advocacy, energy and climate change leaders to share ideas on how we can work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and capitalize on a cleaner energy economy to grow jobs and opportunity. I was so proud to represent Vermont at this summit because when it comes to combating climate change and finding opportunity in a green energy future, our state is a world leader.

Opinion: Solar arrays do not belong on open agricultural lands

Posted on July 20, 2015 |
By Jill L. DeVoe

In regard to all of the solar controversy going on in our world: This is pretty much my response to an e-mail I received pertaining to PSB Docket 8523: The power plant that is proposed for development at 820 Field Days Road in New Haven is seven times the size that our town plan allows. I feel very strongly on my position of responsibility.

Opinion: Found wallet helps reaffirm faith

Posted on July 20, 2015 |
By Louise Zimmer

I write this letter with a grateful heart. On Monday I unknowingly left my wallet at the Sunoco station on Court Street. It wasn’t until I got to my home in Brandon that I discovered the wallet missing. I was so happy to receive a phone call from Joe at the Sunoco station saying he had my wallet. A woman had found it and turned it in.

I have always had faith in God and people in spite of all the negative press we are bombarded with each day. So I thank Joe and this woman for your kind deed and pray that you will be blessed abundantly.

Jessie Raymond: How to hike 5.2 miles in her shoes

Posted on July 15, 2015 |

Not a lot of people know this, but I’m kind of an outdoors expert. I’ve learned a lot over the years, primarily through watching reality TV shows and reading about Lewis and Clark. Also, I have gone outside quite a bit, though mostly just to get the mail.

Opinion: 'A few basics' show that SCOTUS was wrong on marriage

Posted on July 15, 2015 |
By Grace Weber

In the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, let’s review a few basics:

1. Human sexuality cannot be reduced to the pursuit of pleasure.

2. Marriage cannot be reduced to a vehicle either for the acquisition of benefits, or for the enhancement of self-esteem.
