Clippings: Which wolf will you feed, America?

Posted on November 23, 2016 |
By Gaen Murphree

You should have seen the graffiti that greeted Havurah worshippers and supporters this past Saturday. Scrawled all over the sidewalk leading up to the porch of the home of the Jewish Congregation of Addison County were statements like “Blessed are the peacemakers,” “We love you,” and “Love trumps hate’ all up and down the sidewalk.

Victor Nuovo on Spinoza: Being human

Posted on November 23, 2016 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s note: This is the 14th in a series of essays about the Dutch philosopher Benedict Spinoza (1632-1677) and his thoughts concerning nature, God and politics.

What does it mean to be human? Previous essays have given answers to this question or hinted at it. To be human is to be animal, a part of nature, mortal and perishable; it also means being a creature driven by desire, passionate in its pursuit of multiple satisfactions, deluded by fantasies and false hopes or afflicted with horrific visions that cause harm to oneself and to others.

Letter to the editor: Real action, not clicking 'Like,' is what's needed now

Posted on November 23, 2016 |
By Eric Hanson

I recently put a post on my Facebook page, and wanted to share a version of it here. I think that it is really important for users of Facebook and other social media to realize, early on, that clicking on stuff and reacting to posts will not work toward affecting any real change regarding our country’s policies (I’m specifically referring to the incoming administration at the federal level).

Letter to the editor: Beware Trump's careless words

Posted on November 23, 2016 |
By Alexander Lyall

Words are the primary way in which people make themselves heard. Beware the careless and cavalier use of words. Quoting William Bryson, “The urge to switch from the subjunctive to indicative, (hypothetical to literal), is, to paraphrase Alastair Fowler, always powerful.”

Clergy in solidarity with Havurah

Posted on November 21, 2016 |
By Schueneman et. al

By now it should be common knowledge that Havurah, the worship, education, and community center for Jews in our area, was vandalized on Nov. 14. The swastikas scrawled on the door to the building can only be interpreted as an expression of hatred intended to arouse fear. The Middlebury Area Clergy Association, an interfaith organization representing ALL faith traditions in our area, is deeply saddened by this event — and similar events across our country springing from the spiteful tone of the election season.

Vt. forests are linked to clean water

Posted on November 21, 2016 |
By David Brynn

The Addison Independent’s recent article on the revised water quality rules for forestry in Vermont was an excellent one. The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation was quoted as stating that the recent tweaks were designed to give landowners and loggers flexibility “to get the job done.” The forest industry reiterated its continued commitment to getting the job of conserving water quality done in Vermont.

Media responsible for our decline

Posted on November 21, 2016 |
By Bryan Jones

My genuine condolences to all those devastated by the Trump victory. Having Trump win is as disturbing to the left as Al Sharpton winning would be for the right. Those of us on the right need to realize that and show the true compassion that it will take to heal such a wound.

Focus must stay on global warming

Posted on November 21, 2016 |
By Fran Putnam

Angelo Lynn’s editorial, “Inconceivable! And yet, hope,” is right on the mark.

As quoted in the editorial, Bill McKibben said that “the daily heating of the planet” will not cease just because of the election of Donald Trump. Indeed, with little or no action on climate change, our nation and the world will be missing what may be our last, great chance to slow the heating of our planet.
