Opinion: Gift to refugees restored hope

Posted on September 22, 2016 |
By Jean Fifield and Abi Sessions

The Middlebury Refugee Resettlement Committee would like to express its sincere thanks to Roger Paquette of Paquette Storage for his gracious offer of storage space in an empty trailer on his storage lot. Not only did Roger offer storage space for donated furniture and other household goods, he also arranged for one of his drivers, Randy, to drive the large tractor trailer from East Middlebury to the Vermont Refugee Center in Colchester.

Opinion: Rise up in support for Ayer

Posted on September 22, 2016 |
By Dave Silberman

I write to enthusiastically support Claire Ayer for re-election to the State Senate for Addison County.

Through my advocacy work in the State House, I’ve observed firsthand how Claire cuts straight through the partisan politics, and works tirelessly to improve Vermonters’ lives. Using her experience as a Registered Nurse, Claire has pushed forward important public health policies that actually work.

Opinion: Does money buy your vote?

Posted on September 22, 2016 |
By Spencer Putnam

There is plenty to be disturbed about in this election season, but Vermonters should be particularly troubled by the influx of money from out of state trying to influence how we vote. By some reports national Republican groups have already spent over half a million dollars buying television ads on behalf of Phil Scott’s gubernatorial campaign.

Gregory Dennis: I'm seeking paradise on Nantucket Island

Posted on September 22, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

I’ve been on Nantucket for the past few days, revisiting a place I’d spent the past 40 years idealizing as an island paradise. Forty years, that is, since I last visited this 14-mile-long sandbar off the Massachusetts coast.

I thought it was paradise. But now I’m not sure.

Paradise Lost is a theme as old as the Book of Genesis. We lose a little bit of paradise when we emerge from our mother’s womb. Perhaps it’s inevitable that this drama, the sense of something gone, will be played out in ways large and small throughout our lives.

Opinion: Embrace the changing colors

Posted on September 22, 2016 |
By Henry Haskell

I read with amusement the letter to the editor on Sept. 15 about a person or persons who found a cheerful paint job at the National Bank of Middlebury drive-up to be offensive.

I did not see it, as I am of the old school and still enjoy walking into the branch office to have a pleasant conversation with the teller or other people I know.

Guest Editorial: It's time address childcare in Vt.

Posted on September 19, 2016 |
By Robyn Freedner-Maguire

Last week, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced his plan to make child care more affordable, proposing tax deductions and employer incentives to provide child care to employees. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who has proposed that no family should spend more than 10 percent of its income on child care, has also made child care affordability a central campaign focus.

Opinion: Bruhl a logical choice for Addison-5 House seat

Voters of Bridport, Weybridge, and New Haven: To borrow a phrase from Forrest Gump, “Politicians are like a box of chocolates — you never know what you’re gonna get.” With that in mind, I’d like to offer some insight into the box of chocolates with the odd name who’s campaigning to be your state representative.

Guest Editorial: Want jobs? Vote for candidates willing to pay for clean water

Posted on September 15, 2016 |
By James Ehlers

Want Jobs? Vote for Clean Water

With election day fast approaching, we are certain to hear more about “jobs,” “growing economic opportunity” and “building a stronger economy” from candidates for office at all levels. As we should. There is only one problem. How do we attract and retain employers, and with them jobs, if we do not invest in drinking water and wastewater treatment? Short answer: We don’t.
