Opinion: School consolidation has plusses

Posted on May 7, 2015 |
By Peter Conlon

In a recent letter to the editor, Orwell resident Paul Stone argued the Senate and House education bills were mainly aimed at two goals: closing small schools and getting rid of school boards to put more power in the hands of bureaucrats, not citizens. That is a pretty cynical view.

Let’s be realistic. Small schools are already closing due to declining enrollment and high costs, and the enlightened trend among school boards is to do more governing, and less managing, as it should be.

Editorial: Down the rabbit hole: Kennedy portrays extreme views of vaccine opponents

Posted on May 7, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

Robert Kennedy Jr. continued his nationwide anti-vaccine tour with a stopover in Vermont this Tuesday, spreading his campaign of misinformation and misguided claims that the Centers for Disease Control was corrupt and in the hip pocket of “big pharma.” A Vermont-based anti-vaccine group sponsored Kennedy’s visit to Montpelier, paying for his flight and expenses in a last-minute effort to dissuade the Legislature from cutting out the philosophical exemption that currently allows parents to avoid school-mandated vaccinations when children enter kindergarten.

Editorial: Taxes and state priorities

Posted on May 3, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Hundreds of Vermonters from across the state have apparently deluged state senators with the message not to tax their TV, apparently because they think their television service is an essential item and they couldn’t possibly afford any increase in rates.

Hundreds more have argued against extending the sales tax to soda, candy and bottled water, and major lobbying groups have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars opposing the initiative.

Opinion: Students wrong to condemn racial profiling

Posted on May 3, 2015 |
By Ron O'Neill

In two successive Addison Independent issues (April 20 and 23) there have been letters to the editor purportedly from students at Mt. Abraham Union Middle School expressing outrage at the widespread and unacceptable racial profiling.

Opinion: New bill would create added learning opportunities

I believe every Vermont community and family should have access to an Expanded Learning Opportunity program and H.391 is a great step toward that goal.

Opinion: Legal system culpable in release of repeat offender

Posted on May 3, 2015 |
By Barbara Kaiser

I feel compelled to comment on the horrific and untimely death of one of our upstanding community members, Kelly Boe. I cannot tell you how many times I have opened the paper to see that a driver with a number of DUIs is caught yet again driving with a suspended license! How many chances does a driver disobeying the laws have to make a decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and risk the lives of innocent people?

Community Forum: May puts spotlight on foster care service

Posted on April 30, 2015 |
By Laurie Mumley

May is Foster Care Month, a time to celebrate the hundreds of foster and kinship foster families in Vermont who provide safe, nurturing homes for children while they can’t be at home. It is with deep appreciation that the Family Services Division of the Department for Children and Families thanks them for their generosity, caring and willingness to “answer the call,” no matter when it comes.

Legislative Update: economic development a priority

Posted on April 30, 2015 |
By Fred Baser

We are in the final weeks of the Legislative session. I fear if we need to extend the session it will be the House Commerce and Economic Development Committee’s doing, as the 150-page Senate bill (S.138) that we received in our committee a few weeks ago has just left our committee with many changes and additions.

Clippings: Farewell to the Addison Independent

Posted on April 30, 2015 |
By Zach Despart

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that this is my final column for the Independent, as I will be joining the Free Press next week, where I will cover Burlington and city hall.

It was not an easy decision to make, but it was also too difficult to pass up and I look forward to the next step in my career. As I told my colleagues last week, I know I will likely never work in such a supportive environment with colleagues dedicated to helping me hone my skills. Nor one with Crock Pot Fridays.
