Editorial: Sue Minter earns nod for governor in Dem's primary

Posted on August 4, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In the Democratic primary for governor, Sue Minter has emerged as the strongest candidate as the heat of the campaign nears the Aug. 9 vote.

Minter has been in a neck-and-neck battle with Google executive and former state legislator Matt Dunne throughout the primary, though Dunne has lost key support among some environmentalists in the past week. Meanwhile, former U.S. diplomat and state Sen. Peter Galbraith’s progressive campaign never garnered enough public support to be a serious contender.

Editorial: Scott takes the GOP field

By Angelo S. Lynn

If we were judging candidates for governor based solely on their policy positions, former Wall Streeter Bruce Lisman would best his opponent Lt. Gov. Phil Scott. If we were judging these same two candidates based on their accomplishments and business acumen, Lisman’s credentials again rise to the top.

Clippings: Consider my right to not bear arms

Posted on August 4, 2016 |
By Emma Cotton

In June, a stranger handed Seven Days reporter Paul Heintz an AR-15 military-style rifle in exchange for a $500 wad of cash.

Though the two had never met before, though there was no background check performed and no photo ID presented, though the gun was handed over in the parking lot of a busy shopping center, the entire exchange was legal.

Eric Davis: Primary offers competitive contests

Posted on August 4, 2016 |
By Eric Davis

With the Vermont primary a few days away, there are competitive races for governor in both the Democratic and Republican parties, and for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor.

The Democratic contest is now between Matt Dunne and Sue Minter. While Peter Galbraith is a serious candidate, and will receive more than a handful of votes, does his presence on the ballot hurt Dunne or Minter more?

Opinion: Shedding light on downtown vigil

Posted on August 4, 2016 |
By Frances L. Stone

I went to a vigil in downtown Middlebury on Thursday, July 21, for Black Lives Matter.

Of course what came up was: All Lives Matter. This is true and I feel deeply that all lives matter. But, it seems obvious that all lives don’t always matter in our country, for if they did I would not have had to go to the vigil: Black Lives Matter.

So I went to the vigil; a vigil to remind us that Black Lives Matter also.

Opinion: Convention was the latest step on the road to revolution

Posted on August 4, 2016 |
By Diane Lanpher

This week’s writer is Diane Lanpher, a Democratic state representative from Vergennes and a Vermont delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia last week.

Train ride home from Philly.

Two nights of less than three hours sleep each night, one might think a train nap was in order. But not yet. Train is full of returning delegates who also are sleep deprived. Conversations continue and positions are laid out with the passions of a floor debate. We just can not stop ourselves.

Opinion: Bridges traffic could be limited

Posted on August 4, 2016 |
By George Jaeger

The Addison Independent’s lead story on July 28, “Another delay for rail bridges project,” quoted selectman Nick Artim to the effect that another delay would not merely be inconvenient but “raise more concerns about the stability of the two downtown bridges that are deteriorating at a rapid rate.” The article goes on to say that “town officials have been concerned about catastrophic failure of the bridges, or an inspection that could force their closure.”

Opinion: DCF official's killing recalled

Posted on August 4, 2016 |
By Andrea Grimm

Aug. 7, 2015, is a day that will live forever in the hearts and minds of all who work for the Department for Children and Families. That is the day Barre social worker Lara Sobel was killed at work, and it is a day we will never forget.

Since that time, the Middlebury Family Services office has faced its own challenges. We’ve been on the receiving end of numerous threats against our workers while they work to ensure children and youth in Addison County are safe and their families are supported.
