Guest editorial: Vermont is ducking the real debate over jobs

Posted on September 2, 2016 |
By Emerson Lynn

If, as the Georgetown University Center on Education and Workforce predicts, 69 percent of all jobs in New England by the year 2020 will require postsecondary education, and if only slightly more than half of Vermont’s graduating high school seniors enroll in college the following fall, then what is the fallout from the obvious gap between the jobs available and the lack of people qualified to fill them?

Opinion: Rutland High is not the best place for football championship

Posted on September 2, 2016 |
By Steve and Sheila Huestis

We read with great disappointment the decision of the Interscholastic Football League committee to have the high school championship games played at Rutland High School again this year. As pointed out in the article the field is not the best for viewing. We think that is putting it mildly. The field as far as a fan perceptive is worse than awful.

Opinion: Federal bond bank could solve infrastructure problem

Posted on September 2, 2016 |
By Thomas Synnott

There is widespread agreement that our infrastructure — roads, bridges, water systems, railroads and mass transit, flood control and power grids — is in great need of repair, rebuilding or replacement. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) gives it an overall grade of D+, pretty poor for the world’s leading economy.

Eric Davis: Vt. candidates raise legitimate questions about jobs

Posted on September 1, 2016 |
By Eric Davis

“Governing” is a non-partisan magazine based in Washington that focuses on state-level politics and policy. It recently ranked the economies of all 50 states, using a range of indicators measuring employment, state GDP, and the income of state residents. Vermont ranked 25th, in the middle of the pack both nationally and in New England — lower than Massachusetts and New Hampshire, about the same as Maine, and above Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Opinion: Clinton backers aren't rational

Posted on September 1, 2016 |
By Karlene Callahan

This is in response to your editorial of Aug. 22. I realized from the editorial that you are strictly a party person. Obviously, it doesn’t matter what the candidate has done or not done as long as there is a “D” after their name.

Hillary’s supporters, in particular, defy rational thought, there are her obsessive compulsive lies over and over. And yet, for many of these same Americans it is Donald Trump whom they believe is untrustworthy. Do some of these words sound familiar?

Victor Nuovo: Spinoza borrows from Aristotle's universe

Posted on September 1, 2016 |
By Victor Nuovo

In the previous essay, we left Spinoza in search of an idea upon which he could found his philosophical system. As he set out on his way, he looked back to Aristotle in order to orient his thinking.

This is curious, because uppermost in the program of the scientific revolution of the 17th century, which Spinoza approved of and to which he contributed, is the repudiation of Aristotle (384–322 bce). His theory of nature and of the universe, which I will try briefly to describe later in this essay, was judged to be profoundly mistaken and it was generally repudiated.

Guest editorial: Dairy industry is reeling again; time to move to organic?

Posted on September 1, 2016 |
By Roger Allbee

The Vermont dairy industry is again reeling from low commodity prices caused by over-production, a glut of imports, challenges in our export markets and poor economic growth. The stark reality is that the current pricing mechanism for non-organic milk, in place since the 1930’s and other constraints, results in an unfavorable longer term prognosis for Vermont’s economically important and iconic dairy sector.
