Editorial: The 19-foot option for rail bridges; If it's viable, nothing else beats it

Posted on November 14, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

A public meeting this Thursday by the Vermont Agency of Transportation to update residents on the Middlebury downtown bridge/rail project will hopefully do more than review a plan that has come under fire. Rather, it is hoped the AOT will come prepared to answer questions posed in an 18-page document drafted by Bristol attorney James Dumont on behalf of several Middlebury residents that skewers the proposed four-year project.

Letter to the editor: U.S., as did Canada, must embrace inclusiveness

Posted on November 14, 2016 |
By Randy Kritkausky

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness...” Words borrowed from Dickens’ “Tale of Two Cities” summarize my two electoral experiences of the last year, one here in the U.S., the other just north across the border in Canada.

Across the aisle

Posted on November 14, 2016 |
By Gary Margolis

My aisle’s a walk across the road I have

to walk. My neighbor’s stripping his bumper-

peeling decal off. We’ve had little to say

to each other these past twelve months.

Guessing where each other stands,

by the flags we wave. By now we’ve had

enough of this, our barely talking.

We have to get back to the work of

Jessie Raymond: Clean closet, healthy mind ... briefly

Posted on November 10, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

What with the drama surrounding this year’s presidential election, the past week or so has had many of us on edge. But I’ve got it worse than you: Due to the Addy Indy print deadline, I’m writing this before Election Day.

You, at least, know how things turned out.

Community Forum: Be sure to hug your veteran

By Win Smith Jr.

This week’s writer is Win Smith Jr., owner of the Sugarbush ski resort in Warren and former chairman of Merrill Lynch International.

Just before Veterans Day in 1968 my stepfather, dressed up in his Navy uniform and holding a toy sailor, put a revolver to his head and committed suicide on our front steps in Litchfield, Conn.

Letter to the editor: Wake up, bikers and pedestrians

Posted on November 10, 2016 |
By Art Remick

Reference is made to the Steve and Sheila Huestis letter to editors (Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2016) and their reference to the Dr. Patrick Stine letter of Oct. 27. I also drive in Middlebury and around the college area and I applaud the Huestis letter. While students often are guilty of these acts, many other residents are as well, and I want to reiterate two things.

Letter to the editor: New rec center, park appreciated

Posted on November 10, 2016 |
By Max Kraus

What a special community! The sun is shining. I just voted in our beautiful new Rec Center, drove over our modern bridge, looked at the new Municipal Building and watched the workmen taking down the fencing around our gorgeous new park; what a pleasure!

My thanks to our town officials, Middlebury College and the citizens who have spearheaded these grand improvements and to my fellow residents who have supported them.

Yes, Middlebury is a wonderful place to live.

Letter to the editor: Rail bypass is best solution

Posted on November 10, 2016 |
By Frank Punderson

The cost and time to repair our railroad bridges has distracted us from the real issue: public safety. A vulnerable man-made canyon serves as a conduit of lethal product that transits through the heart of our downtown.

Accidents happen: 1984 Amtrak derailment in Essex, the Lac Megantic disaster 7/16/13, and Middlebury’s near catastrophe in October 2007 when 18 railroad cars carrying volatile fuels derailed.

Editorial: Inconceivable! And yet there is hope

Posted on November 10, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

President-elect Donald Trump’s stunning victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton left much of the nation hanging its head in dejection and disbelief. It was for many, to use the famous single-word line in the movie Princess Bride, “inconceivable.”

“I simply can't believe it,” said one local millennial. “America actually chose the schoolyard bully... hate reigns in America. I’m so disappointed and disillusioned about what it means to be an American.”

Community forum: Just the facts about rigged elections and voter fraud

Posted on November 7, 2016 |
By Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos

This week’s writer is Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos.

Recent unsupported allegations and sensationalized reporting are sowing seeds of doubt about our democratic process. This undermines voter confidence and calls into question whether all voices will be heard on Nov. 8.
