Community forum: Teach kids when not to use technology

Posted on July 30, 2015 |
By Linda E. Johnson

This week’s writer is Linda E. Johnson, executive director of Prevent Child Abuse Vermont.

I think most of us understand that technology devices and the Internet are here to stay. They are part of all of our lives whether in our doctor’s offices with online medical records or the many ways we use smartphones, laptops, workplace computers, online games, directional tracking, news and weather updates and televison or alternatives to television in our home and when we travel. Technology has transformed communication and made our world smaller and smarter.

Opinion: State must keep its vistas clear

Posted on July 30, 2015 |
By Vesta and Paul Urband

Vermont is a beautiful state — not only to those of us fortunate enough to live here but also to the many tourists who visit every year. They come to see our lovely farmland, long vistas, mountains, rolling hills, and quaint towns and villages. They do not come to see acres of solar panels marring the views. Vermont does not have or allow billboards, so why are we now looking to mar our countryside with acres of solar panels?

Opinion: Voters looking for bold ideas

Posted on July 30, 2015 |
By Frank H. Russell

Revolutions come because of the immediate need and desire for real change. Professor Newt Gingrich says, “Real change only comes with real change.” Alas, we are seeing it happen. Wonderful.

Opinion: Trust lost in pipeline debate

Posted on July 30, 2015 |
By Diane Derrick

The Vermont Gas Pipeline: costs versus benefits, who really knows; however, trust is priceless and trust does matter.

After attending both days of the technical hearings last month on the Addison Natural Gas pipeline, I walked away with as many questions as I did answers. One of the major concerns I had was what metric method and whose numbers should I rely on.

Guest editorial: Educating a skilled Vt. work force starts early

Posted on July 30, 2015 |
By Emerson Lynn

Some call the process glorified babysitting. And expensive. Some say it is the only means by which the state can break the cycle of poverty that traps low-income students in a closed look, low-wage environment.

The issue is universal pre-K education that, beginning next year, will be required in Vermont’s schools. According to the state department of education, over a third of our schools this fall will be ready to offer services to the three- to five-year-olds targets by the legislation signed into law more than a year ago.

Guest editorial: Vermont's economy needs more investment, innovation

Posted on July 27, 2015 |
By Jim Douglas

Moving Vermont’s economy forward requires investments in both innovation and infrastructure.

There’s no shortage of innovation in Vermont — we’re fortunate to have legacy industries and cutting-edge entrepreneurs eager to contribute to our economy and provide good jobs. It’s not easy for them, however. Costs are higher here than in many other places. And too many areas of our state lack critical energy and telecommunications infrastructure necessary to compete in the 21st-century economy.

Community Forum: Iran deal better than the alternatives

Posted on July 27, 2015 |
By Sen. Patrick Leahy

This week’s writer is U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, ranking member of the Senate’s Subcommittee on the State Department and Foreign Operations.

Two years of arduous negotiations now have produced an agreement to seal off Iran’s path to producing a nuclear weapon.

I will have questions in the detailed briefings and hearings ahead, as I’m sure others will. But we already know quite a bit.

Opinion: Many students disagree with college's pipeline stand

Posted on July 27, 2015 |
By Zane H. Anthony

I am a Middlebury College senior strongly opposed to the college’s position in favor of a proposed 41-mile pipeline siphoning natural gas from Colchester to Middlebury. The full, unflinching support for this proposal among Middlebury faculty, administrators and board members is deplorable and misguided. I commend Bristol lawyer Jim Dumont’s stance that this project, with a price tag surging above $150 million, is a huge mistake for Vermont.

Opinion: Early dementia makes friend's birthday bittersweet

Posted on July 27, 2015 |
By Diana Cotter

On July 23 my best friend Maria will turn 73. She won’t know it’s her birthday as she suffers from early onset dementia.

In the summer of 2005 as I was preparing to move to Vermont, I was diagnosed for the second time with breast cancer. I had already sold my house and had to be out in six weeks, the surgery was in three weeks and I had barely begun to pack.

Opinion: Death of a culture

Posted on July 23, 2015 |
By Fred Barnes

With so many terrible things happening in this world that we must address, each one seems a monumental task. I’m convinced  that all these things are connected. The action we take to address all these terrible circumstances seems to be on a downward spiral, treating violence with more violence.

Why are we alone in the developed world with capital punishment, which has never proved effective in deterring crime? We are a violent culture. We are a warring nation, history proves it.
