Letter to the editor: ANeSU office workers: Unification means efficiencies

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By BibbiJo Conner et. al

As employees of the ANESU Office of the Superintendent, we want to make our voices heard in the Act 46 Unification conversation.

Much has been said about how unification will benefit student learning. We’ll leave that up to the educators.

Some have spoken to the minimal cost savings the district will realize by becoming one. That’s for the business office to speak to.

Letter to the editor: Baser is proven leader and has earned a second term

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Joe Devall

What makes someone a good state representative? A person that listens, thinks, uses common sense, asks questions and works collaboratively with other members. Fred Baser possesses those traits. During Fred’s first term in the legislature he put forward a meaningful bill that would advance construction of workforce housing that is badly needed in our region and it gained bipartisan support.

Letter to the editor: Motorcyclists, bicycle riders safest with extra lights

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Bob Donnis

I agree with Dr. Patrick Stine (Addison Independent 10/27 editorial: “Battery-powered strobe lights could save a life”). I’d like to thank all motorcycle drivers for having their lights on day and night, even though the law only requires they be on at night. As a driver, I appreciate that I can more easily see and avoid you.

Letter to the editor: As Bristol parent and taxpayer, Reen says yes to Act 46

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Patrick Reen

The voters in the five towns of Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro have an incredible opportunity on Nov. 8. We have the opportunity to vote yes on Act 46 to support a new design for governing our schools. This new design promises to increase our focus on teaching and learning, strengthen school-family-community partnerships and also happens to save taxpayers money.

Independent endorses Minter, Zuckerman, other candidates

Posted on November 3, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The Addison Independent has a long tradition of endorsing candidates for statewide office for a single reason: we believe informed opinion stimulates the public conversation and challenges all voters to examine their own reasons for supporting the candidates of their choice. While we stand by our choices, the intent is not to suggest we are “right,” but to demonstrate why our reasoning reflects our perspective.

To that end, here are our choices for statewide offices, and the Senate race in Addison County.

Clippings: Trip abroad puts age in perspective

Posted on November 3, 2016 |
By John Flowers

Clippings by John Flowers Notre Dame Cathedral In Strasbourg.jpg

My brother-in-law Steve and I love to joke about how “old” we’re getting. He’ll ask me what it was like to witness the Boston Tea Party, and if I ever forget where I put my musket. I’ll ask him how he was able correspond with friends prior to the Pony Express, and whether he still gets cost-of-living bumps in his Civil War veteran’s pension.

In reality, we are both just a little north of 50. So while we both receive mail from AARP, we can hardly lay claim to being truly grizzled or wise.

Posted on November 3, 2016 |
By Eric Davis

Two public polls of the Vermont electorate have been released in the past two weeks. One, conducted by the Castleton Polling Institute for Vermont Public Radio, showed the governor’s race essentially tied, with Republican Phil Scott at 39 percent and Democrat Sue Minter at 38 percent. The second, conducted by Braun Research of Princeton, N.J., for WCAX-TV, showed Scott leading by 47 percent to 40 percent, just outside the margin of error.

Letter to the editor: Crosswalks college are risky

Posted on November 3, 2016 |
By Steve and Sheila Huestis

We are writing this in support of Dr. Patrick Stine’s letter (of Oct. 27) regarding strobe lights and unsafe crosswalks. College Street from the rotary to the last crosswalk west of the college buildings is an extremely unsafe area in the dark or rainy hours and if the sun is rising or setting low in the horizon.
