Opinion: Milne is backpedaling on his pre-election pledge

Posted on November 12, 2014 |
By Bob Zeliff

I’ve become disturbed in reading about Scott Milne spending time weighing his options concerning the election results. As recently as two weeks ago he indicated that the election should be determined by the popular vote. Now he is backpedaling that, considering other options. His option of requesting a recount is certainly valid, but expensive, as Lt Gov. Phil Scott pointed out recently.

Community Forum: Equality still elusive for women

Posted on November 12, 2014 |
By Tiffany Bluemle and Linda Tarr-Whelan

This week’s writers are Tiffany Bluemle, executive director of Vermont Works for Women, and Linda Tarr-Whelan, a former ambassador to the UN Commission on the Status of Women and chair of the Task Force on Women and the Vermont Economy.

New England census data leave little doubt that future economic growth hinges upon making the most of our homegrown talent. With the region’s population growth only one-third the national average, New England states have seen a 25 percent decrease in the number of young residents ages 25-34.

Opinion: Spending is replacing parenting in some families

I felt the need to respond to the letter to the editor written by Ronnie Chirnoff regarding uneasy childhood and the comparison to those youth who are successful in life and those who are in trouble. (Addison Independent, Nov. 6, page 5A.)

Opinion: We all have a duty in forging new energy alternatives

Posted on November 12, 2014 |
By Jason Kaye

Our communities’ conversations about solar siting, the gas pipeline, wind turbines and tar sands elicit frustrations, concerns and blame — and understandably so. For me, these conversations evoke something additional: a sense of duty.

Community Forum: GOP's new vision finds support

Posted on November 10, 2014 |
By David Sunderland

This week’s writer is David Sunderland, chairman of the Vermont Republican Party.

Twelve months ago the Vermont Republican Party established a new, more positive vision for itself and Vermont. We listened, heard Vermonters’ concerns and crafted solutions and proposals that address the issues that matter most to them. This will continue to be our approach as we work to move Vermont forward.

Opinion: Mount Abe project planners must focus on priorities

Posted on November 10, 2014 |
By Mary Dearborn

Tuesday night, two-thirds of the voters defeated the proposed school bond. That is two-thirds of the community who are saying no; that they cannot afford a $33 million price tag to improve our school.

Editorial: The hope vs. the travesty

Posted on November 10, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As the birthplace of modern democracy, Americans of all political stripes might be concerned that the national turn-out in this past Tuesday’s mid-term election was just 36.6 percent.

It was one of the lowest turnouts in recent times, and it is likely that the national will might not be accurately represented by the results. That is particularly true when the effect of big money in the campaigns is considered, when we assess the impact of state laws that reduce voter turnout, and when you break down voter demographics.

Editorial: Voters tell Shumlin to be bold, forthright, trustworthy

Vermont voters sent a message to Gov. Peter Shumlin on Tuesday and it was anything but subtle. Voters don’t trust him.

And for good reason.

Editorial: Yep, $33 million bond was too much

Posted on November 6, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The $32 million bond proposal to completely renovate Mount Abe Union High School failed dramatically. By a 3-1 margin, voters in the five-town district said “no way.”

But because the vote was so lopsided, it doesn’t serve as a barometer of how much district voters are willing to spend. That’s especially problematic if the school board is committed to presenting another bond proposal by Town Meeting 2015. To make that happen, a new proposal would have to be fleshed out and warned by the middle of January — just a bit over two months from now.

Clippings: Quarantining man right move for Vt.

Posted on November 6, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

It seemed to be only a matter of time before far-flung headlines about Ebola in Africa hit a little closer to home. That time came last Monday, when Gov. Shumlin announced that a man who had visited West Africa to investigate Ebola was back in Vermont.
