Gregory Dennis: The human factor in Vermont politics

Posted on June 11, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s easy to watch political figures on television or read about them in the paper and forget one thing.

Those are human beings up there.

It may seem that those who live and breathe politics are thick-skinned creatures programmed to the point of being semi-robots. Different from you and me.

They look completely consumed by the process. Everything is a calculation, and every move dissected under the microscope.

But the people at the podiums also bring every emotion to the table.

Eric Davis: Shumlin's decision creates intrigue

Posted on June 11, 2015 |
By Eric Davis

Gov. Peter Shumlin’s announcement that he will not be a candidate for re-election in 2016 was surprising not so much in its substance, but in its timing. Governors Dean and Douglas announced their decisions not to run again in August or September of the year preceding the election, rather than 18 months before the end of their terms.

Guest editorial: No easy solution for Iraq but more boots on the ground is not the anwer

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Haviland Smith

Much of northwestern Iraq is now under ISIS control. Shia Iraq is losing its war with Sunni ISIS. Hawkish American conservatives and neocons demand that we re-invade that country and solve its problems. Others less bellicose tell us that we must increase our military presence there to the tune of about 1,000 troops, concentrating on advising the Iraqis on how to beat ISIS. Moderates generally are not eager to see any U.S. military involvement in the region, preferring to let the antagonists work out their own problems.

Pipeline permit should be pulled

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Ivor Hughes

Back in 2011 Vermont Gas Systems was given the go-ahead for a System Expansion and Reliability Fund to start extracting $4.4 million per year from its current customers in Chittenden and Franklin counties. This was purportedly to fund a $60-$70 million gas pipeline extension from Shelburne to Vergennes and then on to Middlebury (PSB Docket 7712). Seemingly a most generous gift by current ratepayers to its southern neighbors, it’s doubtful that many of them were then, or are even now, aware of the extra tariff tacked on to their monthly bill.

Local newspaper will be missed by faithful reader

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Anne Knowles

Dear Addison Independent,

Before I leave for a new job and home in Orono, Maine, I want to thank you for representing the Addison County community so well. Yours is the first local paper I have ever read closely and looked forward to getting in the mail.

I will miss the Addy Indy, along with the beautiful Champlain Valley, close friends, seeing my daughter grow up with caring teachers and classmates, and the many joys of teaching at Middlebury College.

Costume designer for 'Turandot' draws applause

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Mary K. Kerr

Debby Anderson’s elegant, colorful and beautifully designed costumes were as much responsible for the incredible success of Town Hall Theatre’s sold-out production of “Turandot” as the artists, conductor and director. Yet your reviewer did not see fit to include this remarkable talented lady’s work in her review.

Pilots should pay for airport plan

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Eugene and Jane Roy

There have been a couple of letters published in this newspaper in support of spending $3.5 million to the Middlebury airport. These letters are written by the people fortunate enough to own their own private planes.

There are about 40 planes docked at the airport, and the overwhelming number of flights at the airport are undertaken by these 40 people. We honestly hope they continue to enjoy their hobby and fly safely.

Sanders should appear on ballot

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Frank H. Russell

Wow. In my 88th year I shall (may) have the opportunity to vote for a truly Independent presidential candidate, the honorable Sen. Bernie Sanders, a genuine man of and for the people, with a social consciousness that could save this country.

We need a leader with ideas and solutions. Sen. Sanders is that leader — his record speaks for itself. He is the right man, in the right place, at the right time.

Hopefully the voters will not miss this wonderful opportunity to carry him to the White House.

Businesses wait for natural gas

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Geoffrey Conrad

Those of us in the Middlebury business community who own or operate a facility that is currently dependent on fuel oil and/or propane have been waiting patiently for the arrival of natural gas to our area. The economic benefits are substantial and will result in substantially healthier bottom lines. As we see operating costs, property taxes and the minimum wage rise, these utility savings will enable us to stay competitive in the region and continue to be a vibrant contributor to our area’s economy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Brandon, for paving Route 7 from McDonald’s to Champlain Street as well as the other paving projects being done. What a pleasure it is now to drive and not run into potholes and the like on Route 7.

The crosswalks being painted early are also very nice. Brandon is really starting to shape up. Great job and THANK YOU again.
