OV baseball claims state title: 'We got the job done'

Burlington – From overlooked to over-matched, the Otter Valley baseball team made any skeptic still standing fall flat.

Under the bright lights of Centennial Field, the Otters rolled to a 9-0 victory over top-seeded Burr & Burton, claiming the program’s first championship since 1976.

To reach the Division II state finals, the Otters defeated No. 3 Lamoille in the semi-final match-up as Justin Owen shut down the Lancer offense through 6.2 innings en route to an 8-1 victory.

Tiger girls' lax falls to undefeated Rebels in championship game

CASTLETON — In the end, nobody could stop the South Burlington High School girls’ lacrosse powerhouse this spring.

On Saturday at Castleton State College, the top-seeded Rebels capped off their 16-0 season with a 14-7 victory over No. 2 Middlebury, their third straight title-game victory over the Tigers, all at Spartan Stadium.

Young Commodore softball team falls to BFA-Fairfax in D-II title game

POULTNEY — On Friday night in Poultney, the No. 3 Vergennes Union High School softball team’s Division II title bid came up just short — as did a Commodore sixth-inning home-run bid that would have tied the game — against undefeated No. 1 BFA-Fairfax.

The Bullets improved to 19-0 with a 4-1 victory over VUHS and won their second straight D-II crown, while the Commodores finished at 15-5 for the third straight spring advancing deeper into the playoffs than the season before.

Three high school teams in state championship games this weekend

ADDISON COUNTY — Wednesday turned out to be a huge day for area high school sports teams, which went three-for-three in semifinal games to earn shots at state championships.

The 17-1 Otter Valley baseball team, the second seed in Division II, crunched visiting No. 3 Lamoille, 8-1; the second-seeded Middlebury girls’ lacrosse team doubled up visiting No. 3 Mount Anthony, 16-8; and the No. 3 Vergennes softball team blanked host No. 2 Lyndon, 4-0.

Mary Hogan School athletes enyoy their day in the sun

MIDDLEBURY — Another enjoyable day was had by young athletes at the recent Mary Hogan Elementary School track and field meet, which the school’s physical education department holds every year to introduce fifth- and sixth-grade students to the sport and allow them a fun few hours in the sun.

Several students made the most of it at the May 28 event, which was held at the Middlebury College track: Multiple event winners included Ada Anderson, Ben Turner, Nicky Niemo, Talin Teague, Merry Kimble, Caleb Benz and Tyler Buxton.

Middlebury's Todd Stone stretches his lead in auto racing

SOUTH PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Middlebury racecar driver Todd Stone won one race and finished fourth in another on Saturday at South Plattsburgh’s Airborne Speedway to pad his Modified point lead.

Stone drove the G. Stone Motors No. 1x to his second win of the season in the completion of a race that had been halted by rain the week before, and then started 12th and placed fourth in the Della Auto/Subway 30-lap main event that followed.

Mount Abe’s Scott claims Vermont golf title

WOODSTOCK — Mount Abraham Union High School senior Jona Scott earned Division II and overall medalist honors at the state championship meet at the Woodstock Country Club this past Wednesday by firing a 69, but his Eagle team fell one stroke short of a D-II team championship.

Tiger girls' lacrosse trounces MMU in rain-soaked playoff

MIDDLEBURY —The No. 2 Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team on Friday scored four times in the final 4:16 of the first half on the way to a rain-soaked, 14-7 Division I quarterfinal victory over No. 7 Mount Mansfield.

The Tigers will be seeking yet another berth in a D-I final when they host No. 3 Mount Anthony (13-6) on Tuesday at 4 p.m., with two-time defending champion South Burlington almost certainly awaiting the winner at Castleton State College on Friday. The 14-0 Rebels will host No. 4 Brattleboro (9-7) in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

Commodore baseball falls to Missisquoi in quarterfinal

VERGENNES — As a few rays of sunlight fought through Saturday afternoon’s ominous clouds, the Vergennes Union High School baseball team fought to hold off elimination, rallying from a 5-0 hole against visiting Missisquoi. But just as the sun faded behind the clouds, so did the Commodores’ rally, and their season.

In their quarterfinal match-up with the No. 5 Thunderbirds, the fourth-seeded Commodores fell 6-4, ending their bid to repeat as champions of Division II vs. the team they defeated in the 2012 final.
