VUHS trips up Mount Abe

BRISTOL — In front of the usual high-volume, standing-room-only crowd that goes along with the rivalry between the boys’ basketball teams from Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high schools, the visiting Commodores on Friday took a big lead over the Eagles, withstood Mount Abe’s third-quarter surge, and pulled away for a 64-39 victory.

The result improved VUHS’s season record to a misleading 5-6. Four of their losses have come to Division I teams, and four were by five points or fewer.

Mitchell works his way to school record

BRANDON — It didn’t take Otter Valley Union High School varsity wrestling coach Bob Bathalon too long to figure out he had something special in Forestdale resident George Mitchell.

Seven years ago, Bathalon was still coaching in OV’s youth wrestling programs when Mitchell, now a senior two-time Vermont wrestling champion, caught his eye.

“I started noticing back in 5th and 6th grade. When he came in there you’d see him start wanting more and more and more. He just took off,” he said.

What struck Bathalon were not only Mitchell’s quickness and ability, but also his intangibles.

Panthers stay undefeated

MIDDLEBURY — As it has for the past four years, the Middlebury College men’s basketball team continues to scale unprecedented heights.

This past weekend’s sweep of two home NESCAC games — on Friday with a dramatic rally vs. Wesleyan and on Saturday with a dominant effort against Connecticut College — moved Coach Jeff Brown’s Panthers to a program-record 15-0.

Middlebury (4-0 NESCAC) is also ranked No. 5 in the d3hoops.com NCAA Division III poll, another high-water mark.

Women's hockey crosses Crusaders off list

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team on Tuesday defeated visiting Holy Cross, 4-1, a result that followed a split of a crucial weekend NESCAC series at Amherst that allowed the Panthers to hold onto first place in the league.

The Panthers are 9-3-1 overall, 7-1-1 in NESCAC, while Amherst is 7-4-2, 6-1-1 NESCAC.

Tiger girls score four on defending champs

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team split two home games late last week, but the MUHS co-coaches may have been even happier with the Tigers’ effort in a Friday loss than in a Thursday win.

On Thursday, the 5-5 Tigers doubled up visiting Mount Mansfield, 8-4, in a game that had been postponed from the day before by a snowstorm. The Cougars dropped to 2-7.

Panther women taking step forward

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team stands at 7-2-1 after posting a win and a tie in two home games this past weekend. The Panthers will take on defending NCAA Division III champion Amherst twice on the road this weekend.

On Saturday, a battle between a pair of NESCAC teams ranked in the top 10 nationally, No. 6 Middlebury and No. 9 Trinity, ended in a 1-1 tie despite the Panthers’ 24-17 shots advantage.

Tiger boys hold off Otters

MIDDLEBURY — In an entertaining Saturday game, the much improved Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team outlasted rapidly improving Otter Valley, 54-44, at MUHS.

As well as displaying maximum effort, players showed sportsmanship as well — they often patted each other on the back or helped each other up after diving or colliding as they hustled for loose balls or rebounds.

MIDDLEBURY — The visiting Otter Valley Union High School girls’ basketball team earned what the Otters hope will be a breakthrough victory on Tuesday, when they rallied from an eight-point second-quarter deficit for a dramatic 46-43 win at Middlebury.

Local wrestlers take titles at tourney

MIDDLEBURY — Four local wrestlers — three from Vergennes Union High School and one from host Middlebury — stood atop the podiums on Thursday at the end of the Tigers’ two-day annual Hubie Wagner Invitational Tournament.

And for each of them, the tournament title meant something extra.

Tiger boys settle for dramatic tie in title game

MIDDLEBURY — There’s more than one way to look at the Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team’s Tuesday game against Lake Placid in the final of the Tigers’ Duke Nelson/Wendy Forbes Memorial Hockey Tournament.

In the books it does down as a 4-4 tie that leaves the Tigers with a 3-1-1 record. But the Blue Bombers earned the tournament title at the Memorial Sports Center with a 2-1 win in the shootout that followed a scoreless sudden-death overtime.
