Legion baseball primed for tourney

MIDDLEBURY — For two months, dreams of success and glory have been forming among some of the top American Legion baseball teams across Vermont. Now, as the focus shifts toward Castleton and the state tournament this Thursday through Monday, it is time for these dreams to come to fruition.

For Addison County, earning a five wins in nine games played in seven days means the team can pencil themselves in as the top seed in the North Division of the state tournament.

Two Tigers help Vermont claim soccer cup from New Hampshire

RINDGE, N.H. — Two recent Middlebury Union High School graduates and Tiger soccer standouts gave strong performances representing Vermont in the annual Lions Twin State Soccer Cup in Rindge, N.H., this past Saturday. The Vermont boys’ team beat the New Hampshire all-stars, 5-2.

Connor Collins in particular shone as a central defender, playing all but five minutes of the game, earning some key stops and being honored with the “12th Player” award after the game.

Film to revist '83 Tiger hoop team

MIDDLEBURY — In 1983, the Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team shocked the Vermont sports world.

Despite an undefeated regular season, the Tigers were lightly regarded heading into the Division I playoffs. Almost all of their wins came against D-II teams, not against the D-I iron.

Legion baseball surging toward postseason

MIDDLEBURY — With the postseason looming, the Addison County American Legion baseball team is in its most daunting stretch of the season. Due to earlier postponements, AC recently began a stretch of nine games in nine days.

AC (14-2, 13-2 in Northern Division play as of Tuesday) started off on July 12 by playing at surprise playoff contender Montpelier. Powered by a dominant pitching performance from Devin Hayes, AC jumped ahead early and held on for a 2-1 victory.

Little League: Mt. Abe youth softball team wins state crown

LYNDONVILLE — The Mount Abraham 11-and-12-year-old Little League softball all-star team ran the table at this past weekend’s double-elimination state tournament in Lyndonville to earn the title of Vermont champions.

Mount Abe, the District I champion, opened the tournament by drawing a bye on Thursday, July 11, and then defeated the Essex all-stars, 11-7, on Friday. On Saturday, host Lyndonville eliminated Essex, and on Sunday, Mount Abe nailed down the crown by blanking Lyndonville, 10-0.

Basketball: Local stars help Vermont take Twin State game

ESSEX — Two local high school basketball all-stars and one who will play in these parts next winter helped the Vermont boys defeat New Hampshire, 89-84, in Saturday’s Twin State Basketball Classic pitting recent high school graduates from each state in games played at Essex High School.

The New Hampshire girls defeated Vermont, 61-59, despite the coaching work of Mount Abraham’s Connie LaRose. No local athletes played for the Green Mountain State.

Alum to lead Tiger field hockey

MIDDLEBURY — Successful Middlebury Union High School field hockey coach Kelley Higgins has decided to step down after seven years, citing family reasons, and one of her former players, 2007 MUHS graduate Megan Sears, will replace her.

Higgins’ résumé includes the 2011 Division I championship, a trip to the final in Sears’ senior year, and semifinal berths in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Overall, her teams compiled a 56-39-19 record while playing in the Metro Conference, by far Vermont’s toughest league.

Voyageurs’ trip to arena seen as plus for future of box lacrosse

MIDDLEBURY — This past weekend’s inaugural visit of the Vermont Voyageurs semi-pro box lacrosse team to Middlebury’s Memorial Sports Center went well enough that the team’s management is considering another weekend-long visit next summer.

The Voyageurs’ senior and junior teams played a series of games at the Sports Center on Saturday and Sunday, drawing a decent crowd at $7 a pop on Saturday night and at least some fans for an early afternoon game the next day.

Legion baseball racks up victories

MIDDLEBURY — As the Northern Division playoff contenders begin to distance themselves from the pack for the stretch run, the Addison County Legion team continued to roll, reeling off four recent wins in four days.

Addison began the stretch by grabbing a pair of come-from-behind victories against visiting South Burlington on Saturday, 5-4 and 3-2.

On Sunday, AC traveled to Hinesburg to face S.D. Ireland for the third and final time on the season and held off a rally for a 6-4 victory, winning the season series, 2-1.

Middlebury graduate out of Tour De France

CAGNES-SUR-MER, France (AP) — “Crying on the inside,” American rider Ted King fought back tears on July 3 as the Tour de France peloton rode away without him, because he was too injured to complete the previous stage in regulation time.

Some other riders felt race regulators were overzealous in excluding the Cannondale rider and Middlebury College graduate for being a fraction too slow in the team time trial.
