MIDDLEBURY — On Friday, a Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team in a stretch drive for a top Division I playoff seed got past a visiting Mount Abraham team that continues to have few wins to show for its efforts, 85-29.

The Eagles trailed by just 9-7 late in the first quarter, but the Tigers closed the period with a 6-0 run and then dropped a 27-9 second quarter on Mount Abe.

MUHS Coach Chris Altemose said the 14-4 Tigers’ goal is to play the best they can regardless of the opponent, a target they hit on Friday.

MIDDLEBURY — In a Tuesday night college men’s basketball game with more twists and turns than Route 125 on the way to Ripton, Amherst made the last in a series of incredible plays and left a packed, roaring Pepin Gymnasium with a 104-101, triple-overtime win over Middlebury.

The win gave the 22-2 Lord Jeffs the NESCAC title with a 10-0 record in league play and home court advantage for the NESCAC postseason, and will at least preserve their No. 2 ranking in NCAA Division III.

Eagle girls' basketball tunes up for tourney

bballgirls146.jpg

BRISTOL — Like most nights for the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team, Monday lacked drama: The Eagles rolled to a 25-2 second-quarter lead over visiting Missisquoi and coasted to a 54-12 win over the 1-14 T-Birds.

That’s the way it’s been in most of the 15-1 Eagles’ games: They have won 10 of their 15 games by 20 points or more, and 14 by at least 12. Otter Valley is the exception — OV came within 46-38 back on Dec. 19.
