Teen leaders sought for 'science cafes'

BURLINGTON — Teens interested in science and technology are invited to apply for a position on the leadership team that will design, organize and host TRY (Teens Reaching Youth) Science Cafés.

Applications will be accepted through Oct. 1. Any student in grade 9-12 is eligible to apply, but must either reside in the Burlington area or be willing to travel to Burlington for monthly organizational meetings and cafés.

TRY Teen Science Cafés, sponsored by UVM Extension 4-H, provide an opportunity for teens to explore current and cutting-edge science and technology and its relevance to their lives though networking, discussions and hands-on activities with scientists, engineers and technology experts. The leadership team is responsible for organizing all aspects of these free, informal cafés, from choosing the topics, planning and promoting the program and inviting speakers to facilitating the event, including setup and breakdown of the venue. Members are also expected to raise awareness of the program in their schools and communities and actively recruit other teens to participate in the cafés.

Involvement on the leadership team provides teens with valuable leadership, communications and organizational skills through real-life experience. It also helps them build their resumés for college applications and scholarships as well as employment.

Potential applicants may request an application form from Lauren Traister, University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H Teen and Leadership Program coordinator, at lauren.traister@uvm.edu. If requiring a disability-related accommodation to participate, contact her at (866) 260-5603, ext. 402, before Oct. 1.
