MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Safe Routes and the Middlebury Energy Committee have organized a slate of events in upcoming weeks promoting biking and healthy outdoor activities.
“There’s lots happening on the bike/ped front in Middlebury and Addison County,” said Laura Asermily, a member of both goups.
The activities include:
• Bike & Outdoor Gear Swap & Sale, Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to noon in Cannon Park. From Monday, April 25, to noon on Friday, April 29, people may drop off bikes they wish to give away or sell on consignment at The Bike Center. People may also rent a table for $10 for outdoor gear they wish to give away or sell. Organizational groups may also rent a table for display. Look for the smoothie bike on the park and great deals at The Bike Center, Middlebury Mountaineer, Forth ’N Goal and Vermont Field Sports.
• Electric Car & Bike Demo, Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m. to noon in Middlebury’s Mill Street parking lot. All are invited to see Middlebury’s Electric Vehicle charging stations and meet with EV car owners and dealers. People can also learn about and test ride electric bikes and electric riding mowers.
• Kelly Boe Memorial Ride, Monday, May 2, 4 pm., departing from the Middlebury Union High School entrance and looping through Weybridge. This ride commemorates those hurt or killed in road bike accidents. A helmet and signed liability waiver form are required. Donations toward improving bike parking and road safety are welcome.
• Intergenerational Walk & Roll to School Day, Wednesday, May 4. Middlebury Safe Routes encourages children all over Vermont to celebrate the benefits of walking and biking to school. Local pediatricians and health practitioners are invited to join South Village and Seymour Street walking routes or the Painter Hills/Washington Street Extension bike train. All routes depart by 7:40 a.m. and arrive at Mary Hogan School by 8 a.m.
• Bike Safety Fair, Wednesday, May 4, 3-4 p.m. at the Mary Hogan School side lot. Join Middlebury Safe Routes for a bike safety fair after school. Riders can test their skills through the obstacle course. The event includes helmets, safety checks and prizes.
• Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 13. Try this day of biking to work during May, which is National Bike Month. Riders can post their miles at nationalbikechallenge.org.
