BRANDON — All the items on the Brandon town meeting ballot were approved, including the $2,999,986 municipal budget, which earned 437 yes votes to 199 no votes. The amount to be raised by taxes to cover that budget is $2,559,066, which represents a 1.1 percent decrease, from 94.37 cents to 93.43 cents per $100 of property value.
Voter turnout was dismally low, with just 651 people voting out of 2,897, or roughly 22 percent.
The article asking voters to spend up to $50,00 for paving on North Street, Furnace Road and elsewhere in town was approved, 488-148.
All of the appropriations for non-profit groups earned voter approval, including $85,000 for the Brandon Library; $13,500 for the Brandon Senior Center; and $20,735 for the Brandon Area Rescue Squad.
All of the incumbents looking to return to their to town positions were unchallenged. Re-elected were Bill Moore, town moderator; Sue Gage, town clerk and town treasurer; Doug Bailey, three-year term on the selectboard; Brian Coolidge and Seth Hopkins, one-year term each on the selectboard; Tanner Romano, trustees of public funds; Carol Fjeld, Brandon Library board of trustees.
Residents weighed in on the Otter Valley Unified Union School District budget via Australian ballot on Tuesday. Voters approved a $19,772,608 spending plan for the OVUUSD, which includes the towns of Brandon, Goshen, Pittsford, Sudbury, Leicester and Whiting. The spending plan passed by a tally of 635-438 district wide and represents $14,708 per equalized student, a 1.4 percent increase from the 2016 fiscal year.
Brandon voters also cast ballots for three at-large school board members. In the only contested race, Barbara Ebbing of Brandon won a seat over Eileen Guyette of Pittsford, 567-413. Ebbing will finish the remaining two years on a three-year seat; plus Emily Nelson and Matt Philo won election to fill two three-year seats.
