BRANDON — The John Seeley Estabrook Memorial Trust has presented their annual award to a highly deserving and talented recipient, Kalle Fjeld of Brandon. The award was presented at a reception held at the Brandon Public Library on July 17. The Trust was established in 1986 to give recognition to outstanding residents of Brandon and the surrounding areas served by Dr. Estabrook. The award is given to those who are presently pursuing activities in the fields of medicine and/or sports.
Fjeld is a native of Brandon and the daughter of George and Carol Fjeld. She attended Neshobe Elementary School and graduated as class valedictorian from Otter Valley in 2008. You may recognize her from her work at various Brandon businesses: The Brandon Inn, Gourmet Provence, the Inside Scoop, and Briggs Carriage Bookstore.
Fjeld graduated summa cum laude from the University of Vermont in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies. With the highest GPA in her major, Fjeld earned the Global Studies Scholar Award. At UVM she was an Honors College Scholar, which required that she write and defend an undergraduate thesis. She participated in the Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society, a Global Studies Honor Society. While attending UVM, Fjeld was a writing tutor at the UVM Writing Center, where she worked extensively with ELL (English Language Learner) students.
Fjeld speaks French. During her college years she studied in Toulouse, France. After college, she returned to France for several months to work with middle- and high-school aged students as an English Teaching Assistant.
Fjeld is an avid horseback rider, a member of the Green Mountain Hounds Foxhunting Club, and the owner of a horse named Mister. She has also worked as a professional pastry chef at several bakeries, including Gourmet Provence. Fjeld is a pianist, saxophonist, bassoonist, and clarinetist. She has played in various ensembles beginning when she was a student at Neshobe Elementary. She continued to play in groups at Otter Valley and the University of Vermont. Years after graduating high school, she continues to play in Otter Valley’s pit orchestra for their Walking Stick Theatre performances. This summer you may even see her in the Town Band.
Fjeld currently works as a Medical Scribe at Rutland Regional Medical Center and will be starting her studies at the University of Vermont Medical School in the fall of 2017. She hopes to be a rural primary care physician in Vermont. Vermont will be lucky to have her in that role.
