Commodores and Tigers both win softball games

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury and Otter Valley won high school softball games late last week, but postponements hit Mount Abraham and Vergennes.
Mount Abraham’s Thursday game at Rice was called off, as was the Commodores’ game that day at South Burlington. Information on the Commodores’ Saturday game at Randolph could not be obtained before Sunday’s deadline and will be included in Thursday’s edition.
OTTERS
On Thursday, the Otters opened their season with a 7-1 win at Leland & Gray (1-2). Courtney Bushey earned the complete-game win, allowing eight hits. Katie Coolidge doubled twice and singled, and Gabby Poalino andMeghan Hallett each doubled, singled and drove in a run for OV.
On Saturday, host Brattleboro topped the Otters, 19-2, pounding out 17 hits off losing pitcher Courtney Bushey. Gabby Poalino had two of the three OV hits, a two-run first-inning homer and a single, and Shayla Phillips also singled. Two Colonel pitchers combined on the five-inning three-hitter.
TIGERS
On Thursday, the Tigers topped visiting Champlain Valley, 9-2, as Payton Buxton tossed a complete-game three-hitter, struck out eight, and homered and singled. Lily Smith andDarcy Staats both doubled and singled to help the Tigers improve to 2-1.
