Middlebury Police Log: Police help man after medical episode

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police were called to a car crash on Sept. 13 when an older man had experienced a medical episode while driving up Route 7 North and veered off the road. The man was found unresponsive behind the wheel of the car. 
Fortunately, an off-duty staffer from the Middlebury Regional Emergency Medical Services (MREMS) was in the area, revived the man, and applied CPR until the ambulance on duty arrived.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Responded to a noise complaint at the South Village Green apartments complex on Sept. 7.
•  Investigated a report of some people riding ATVs in a field off Three Mile Bridge Road on Sept. 7. Police said they couldn’t find the ATVs.
•  Assisted an Exchange Street resident who on Sept. 8 reported receiving threatening messages from someone outside of Vermont.
•  Provided traffic control for a tractor-trailer truck that had become stuck on Main Street on Sept. 8.
•  Assisted MREMS with a man who had hurt himself after falling near the Pulp Mill Covered Bridge on Sept. 8.
•  Responded to a theft complaint in the Willard Street area on Sept. 8.
•  Responded to a theft complaint in the South Main Street area on Sept. 8.
•  Received a report on Sept. 8 that a local man had refused to pay for some calves he had recently purchased. The county prosecutor has classified the case as a civil matter, according to police.
•  Assisted MREMS with a patient who had overdosed on drugs off Route 7 South on Sept. 9.
•  Received a report about a truck speeding off after allegedly hitting a stop sign at the intersection of North Pleasant and Seminary streets on Sept. 10.
•  Assisted Vermont State Police at the scene of a two-car crash at the intersection of Route 7 south and West Salisbury Road on Sept. 10.
•  Responded to an untimely death report at an Elm Street home on Sept. 10. Police determined the deceased, 95-year-old Betty Thurber, had succumbed due to a medical cause.
•  Investigated a report of cruelty to a family member at a Taylor Avenue home on Sept. 11.
•  Assisted Middlebury College Public Safety in serving no-trespass orders on Sept. 12 to two men who were not wanted on campus.
•  Asked two drunken men to leave the Champlain Farms store on Court Street on Sept. 12. Police said the men were attempting to buy more alcohol.
•  Began an investigation on Sept. 12 into a suspicious package, believed to contain drugs, which had been delivered to a patient at Porter Hospital.
•  Assisted MREMS with a patient at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel on Court Street Extension on Sept. 12.
•  Connected a local, suicidal man with mental health services on Sept. 13.
•  Discovered vandalism to the door of a shed off Washington Street on Sept. 14.
