MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Jackson Downey-Teachout, 30, of Salisbury for driving under the influence, following a two-car crash on Court Street on Jan. 21.
Police said they suspected Downey-Teachout might have been driving under the influence of drugs, based on a screening performed by a Drug Recognition Expert affiliated with the Vergennes Police Department. Police said lab results are pending in this case.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Assisted Vermont State Police in serving a citation on a resident of the South Village Green apartments on Jan. 18.
•  Assisted a couple whose vehicle had become stuck in a steep driveway off Munger Street on Jan. 18.
•  Investigated an alleged case of animal cruelty in the Case Street area on Jan. 19. And in a separate incident on that same date, police responded to a report of a dog being locked in a vehicle for several hours while it was parked off Main Street.
•  Launched an investigation on Jan. 19 into reports of a suspect allegedly stealing items from an Elm Street garage.
•  Served a no-trespass notice on Jan. 19 on a person who wasn’t wanted at a Court Street business.
•  Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS on a report of a man who was unresponsive and not breathing at the Residence at Otter Creek on Jan. 20. Police said the man was conscious and speaking upon their arrival.
•  Responded to a report of a disoriented woman at The Commons apartment complex off Buttolph Drive on Jan. 20. Police asked Middlebury Regional EMS to evaluate the woman.
•  Received reports from two out-of-state callers on Jan. 20 that a local juvenile had been posting suicidal comments online. Police said they spoke with the child’s father and determined the child was safe.
•  Spoke with a local man on Jan. 20 who complained of having child custody problems with his ex-wife.
•  Spoke on Jan. 20 with the New Haven-based owners of livestock that they contend have been getting loose from rented property off Munger Street. Once loose, police allege the animals have been “entering other farmers’ barns and property doing damage, in addition to the traffic hazard.” Police said they’ve sent the owners a “demand letter” informing them they need to secure their animals or the case will be turned over to the Secretary of Agriculture, Food and Markets for investigation.
•  Investigated a Jan. 20 report of a man allegedly walking on South Street in a way that was impeding traffic. Police said the man told them he was “trying to get to New Jersey,” whereupon police took him to the Addison County Transit Resources bus stop.
•  Responded to a noise complaint in the South Main Street area at 2:13 a.m. on Jan. 21.
•  Assisted Porter Hospital staff with a man who was having a mental health crisis on Jan. 21.
•  Assisted Mary Hogan Elementary School officials with a student who had refused to return to school on Jan. 22.
•  Referred on Jan. 22 to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force a possible local case of online child exploitation.
•  Investigated a Jan. 22 report of two local people threatening each other through social media. Police spoke with both parties, who agreed to stop contacting each other.
•  Received a report from a woman who alleged someone stole prescription drugs from her purse while she was in the Route 7 South area on Jan. 24.
