Eagles, Otters post key baseball victories; MUHS, VUHS lose

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school baseball this past Wednesday and Thursday, Mount Abraham and Otter Valley each posted big wins away from home, but Vergennes and Middlebury lost on the road.
Games held on Friday and Saturday were played after the early holiday deadline for this edition of the Independent.
The Vermont Principals’ Association will release playoff pairings on Monday morning, and first-round games will begin on Tuesday and Wednesday.
EAGLES
On Thursday, the Eagles wrapped up their season with a nail-biting, 7-6 win at Spaulding. The Eagles scored all seven runs in the first two innings, and then stranded Spaulding’s potential tying run on third base with two outs in the seventh when second baseman Wyatt Gendreau ranged up the middle to take a base hit away from a Tide batter and throw him out at first. George Bailey pitched into the fifth to earn the win, and Dustin Whitcomb finished up for a save.
The Eagles scored three runs in the first. After two walks and a hit-batsman, Adam Whitcomb and Gendreau drove in runs with ground balls and Coleman Russell singled in the third run. In the second, Keion Correll singled, Jared Forand walked and Dustin Whitcomb singled before Chris Wood drilled a three-run double. Gendreau then singled to plate Wood with the seventh Eagle run.
At 7-9 the defending D-II champion Eagles will earn at least the No. 6 seed and could move up higher if teams scheduled to play on Friday and Saturday lost games.
OTTERS
On Wednesday OV scored four runs in the seventh to snap a tie and defeat host Fair Haven, 6-2. Payson Williams’ squeeze bunt scored Reilly Shannon with the go-ahead run, and Nate Hudson scored on an error on the play. Josh Beayon doubled in the third run, and Colby McKay’s third hit of the game made it 6-2.
OV took a 2-0 lead in the second on a McKay infield hit, two errors and a Kollin Bissette squeeze bunt. The Slaters tied it in the third on two errors and a Seth Hoenes infield hit. Hudson preserved the tie in the sixth by throwing a runner out at home trying to tag up on a fly to right field.
Derek Aines tossed a complete-game six-hitter for the win, striking out six and walking four. Losing pitcher Jesse Tucker tossed 6.1 innings, allowing five hits and two walks and striking out three for the 6-9 Slaters. Cody Seaver had two hits and struck out the final two OV hitters.
OV improved to 9-6 and at least temporarily moved into second place in the D-II standings, pending results elsewhere later in the week. They were set to wrap up with a visit to 2-13 Mill River on Friday.
TIGERS
On Thursday, Burlington’s Saul Minaya tossed a one-hitter as the Seahorses topped the Tigers, 1-0. Brian Foote provided the Tiger hit, and Wyatt Cameron took the pitching loss. At 1-15, the Tigers will not qualify for the D-I playoffs.
COMMODORES
On Thursday, host North Country edged the Commodores, 7-6. Details on the game were not available before deadline. VUHS finished the regular season at 5-11 and looks to be the No. 9, 10 or 11 seed in D-II depending on weekend results elsewhere.
