FAIR HAVEN — Ronald Lewis Wetherby, 76, died unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Ron was born in Rutland on Dec. 20, 1942, the son of Walter and Donna (Lewis) Wetherby. He grew up on the family farm in Wallingford and received his early education in local schools. Later he moved with his family to a farm in Rutland Town until 1956 when they moved to the property that he spent 63 years working and caring for in Fair Haven. FAIR HAVEN — On this past Wednesday host Fair Haven defeated the Otter Valley Union High School boys’ soccer team in double overtime, 3-2. Slater Tyler McClure netted the game-winner on a cross from Kaylo Stevenson. The Slaters took a 2-0 first-half lead on goals from Jake Hochberg and Nick Carrabino. Hayden Bernhardt broke the ice for OV in the second half, and Otter Jeremy Coan tied the game late in regulation. The Otters fell to 1-10. BRANDON — The host Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team crunched winless Fair Haven on Tuesday, 14-0, to improve to 7-2. The Otters remained in second place in Division II, but face tougher competition down the stretch, with games vs. Windsor, D-III’s top team; D-I Rutland; and a scrappy Woodstock squad. On Tuesday Alia Edmunds led the Otters with six goals, Brittney Jackson contributed four, Riley Keith scored two, and Ryleigh LaPorte and Isabella Falco each added one. FAIR HAVEN — The Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team romped past winless host Fair Haven on Tuesday, 15-0. The 6-2 Otters should face a stiffer test at Woodstock on Friday. Alia Edmunds led the rout with four goals and assists, and Morgan LaPorte also scored four times. Riley Keith scored twice, and Livia Bernhardt, McKenzie McKay, Bella Falco, Alice Keith and Ellie Ross — OV’s starting goalie taking a turn in the field — added a goal apiece. Ross made three saves and Madison Colburn added two saves for OV, while Fair Haven’s Jordyn Howard stopped 20 shots.

FAIR HAVEN — Host Fair Haven held off the Otter Valley Union High School girls’ soccer team on Tuesday, 4-2, in a game postponed from Monday. Olivia White scored both OV goals, both on setups from senior classmate Julia Eastman. Coach John White said senior center back Leah Pinkowski played a strong game against the 6-0 Slaters, Division II’s first-place team. The Otters return to action in their homecoming game, vs. Hartford at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

MIDDLEBURY — Friday’s season opener on Doc Collins Field for the Middlebury Union High School football team pitted the Tigers, a losing Division I semifinalist in 2018, against Fair Haven, a D-II finalist. The game was expected to be a challenge, but it didn’t work out that way. The Tigers romped to touchdowns on their first three, and four of their five, first-half possessions and held the Slaters to 48 first-half yards on the way to a 34-0 lead at the break. FAIR HAVEN — Host Fair Haven, a Division II finalist a year ago, eased past the visiting Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team on Tuesday, 43-18. The Slaters used pressure defense to score 18 points in the second period on the way to a 30-7 lead at the half. Slater Ryleigh Coloutti had 12 of her game-high 19 points in the second quarter.  Courtney Brewster chipped in nine points for the 2-1 Slaters. Ashley Sunderland paced the Tigers with five points. MUHS (0-2) will visit Otter Valley on Thursday.
