SHIRLEY POMINVILLE TENDS to a beautiful bed of flowers in the traffic island at the intersection of Seminary and Washington streets in Middlebury on Tuesday morning. A few years ago Shirley’s son Joel replaced the depleted old soil in the traffic island with rich new soil and his mother began planting and caring for an ever-growing bed of flowers. This morning she was pulling weeds while her daughter Kathy watered. “I get so much pleasure of it,” Shirley said.
