MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School football team simply ground down visiting Essex on Friday night in a 27-9 Division I victory.
The 5-0 Tigers, even with a patchwork offensive line, rushed 40 times for 373 yards while completing only one pass for four yards. They also allowed the Hornet offense only 208 yards, 58 on the ground.
Essex had no answers for the Tiger’s rushing attack. It didn’t matter who carried the ball, although quarterback Tim Goettelmann (10 carries, 108 yards, three touchdowns) and halfback Tyler Buxton (eight attempts, 129 yards, one TD) did most of the damage....
BRANDON — The Otter Valley football team defeated visiting Oxbow on Saturday, 23-15, on a tie-breaking, 76-yard touchdown pass from QB Alex Polli to Chance Passmore with 24 seconds to go.
Running back Nathaniel Blake’s two-point conversion run created the final score in the Division III matchup, but the Otters had to survive a scare after Oxbow completed a pass to the OV six after the ensuing kickoff. OV linebacker Spencer Pelkey sacked Oxbow QB Cooper Simmons to end the threat.
OV improved to 3-2 and took over fourth place in D-III, while Oxbow dropped to 2-3 and into fifth.

LEWISTON, Maine — The Middlebury College football team dominated host Bates this past Saturday, 28-0, to improve to 2-0. The Panthers are one of three NESCAC teams, along with Amherst and Wesleyan, who remain unbeaten in the early going. Middlebury will seek to move to 3-0 at home vs. Trinity on Saturday at 1 p.m.

BRISTOL — In a Friday game not decided until the final horn the Division III Otter Valley Union High School football team left Bristol with a 27-18 victory over D-II Mount Abraham-Vergennes.
In the fourth quarter Eagles twice stopped the Otters, who were up by 21-18 and threatening to ice a victory, deep in Eagle territory.
And Mount Abe was driving toward a potential tying or go-ahead score when a holding call nullified a gain that would have put them within the range of sophomore kicker/quarterback Adam Mansfield.

MIDDLEBURY — Friday’s season opener on Doc Collins Field for the Middlebury Union High School football team pitted the Tigers, a losing Division I semifinalist in 2018, against Fair Haven, a D-II finalist.
The game was expected to be a challenge, but it didn’t work out that way.
The Tigers romped to touchdowns on their first three, and four of their five, first-half possessions and held the Slaters to 48 first-half yards on the way to a 34-0 lead at the break.

BRISTOL — Visiting Oxbow defeated the Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative football team, 33-14, on Saturday, in the Division II opener for both high school programs.
Oxbow running back Jace Page and quarterback Cooper Simmons combined to score or throw for all five Oxbow touchdowns. Simmons set the tone early by tossing an 80-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Locke on the game’s first play from scrimmage.
Eagle sophomore quarterback Adam Mansfield amassed 220 yards passing in the setback. Many of those yards came on throws to sophomore Carmelo Miceli, who totaled 165 yards receiving.
