The scene Americans will likely remember of Trump’s disastrous four-year presidency will be when a mob of his supporters — egged on by Trump in an earlier rally — broke through the thin line of the capitol’s police force and stormed the nation’s capitol, breaking windows, occupying the Senate chamber and sending Senators and House members scrambling for cover in gas masks, as police inside the building drew their weapons in an harrowing incident that caused one person to be shot and killed. It was an attack on the nation’s Capitol orchestrated by a president who has refused to accept his...
Could President Trump’s rage-tweets against Republican governors and secretaries of state who have certified a Biden victory mark the beginning of a break-up of the Republican Party into pro-Trump and mainstream conservative factions? The Republican and Democratic parties have contested American presidential elections since 1856. While the current two parties both have long histories, the structure of the American political party system did undergo several changes in the first half of the 19th century. The Federalist Party withered away in the 1810s. The party that in some ways replaced the...
I too am a Vermonter, with family in VT before it became a state. However, I must take issue with last week’s letters re: Trump and Republicans. (Addison Independent, Nov. 19, “GOP’s evolution has become threat to our way of life”). As you may recall, many of us were originally Republicans, but today's Republican Party is not the same as our parents’ Republican Party. I now consider myself a GDI, or gosh darn independent. I do support Gov. Scott and his moderate side of the Republicans, but I cannot, nor ever have, supported Trump. I now vote for the person and not the party. To paint all...
While D. Jerk Trump is having Georgia recount the votes there, for a state that he has little chance of winning, and that won’t change the outcome of the election, let’s just reflect on reality here. Joe Biden is our president-elect, he received wide support across the nation, and he literally blew Trump away with over 5 million votes! This is a mandate to wipe away the four awful years we had to endure the Fascist fool in the White House with his awful conduct and policies, his gang of corrupt lackeys and lap dogs, and total idiot supporters who Trump doesn’t really care about anyway and...
What’s not to like about Governor Phil Scott — he’s doing a good job with the pandemic, he watches the budget, and he drives a stock car. I like these things as a Vermonter who grew up within earshot of Thunder Road (I still remember Ronnie Marvin’s number 13,) but I’m not going to vote for Phil Scott. Why? He belongs to the Republican party and I’ve voted for Republicans many times, but those were different times. That Republican party would never sue the state of Vermont to keep us from voting by mail. Voter fraud? Give me a break — our town clerks and postal workers are good honest people...
It is an exciting election cycle this year in Vermont. Not only is it easier to cast your vote, but also, while in previous most years candidates have run for legislature uncontested, this election cycle we have Republicans running against Democrat/Progressive incumbents statewide. We now have options for people seeking representation that limits government, protects our freedoms, supports the autonomy of businesses and families, upholds virtuous values, and opposes increasing taxes. There are 150 seats in the Vermont House of Representatives and 30 seats in the Senate. Statewide, there are...
Ten years ago this week, President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law. As the United States faces its greatest public health crisis in a century, the Trump Administration is actively supporting an effort by Texas and other states to have the entire ACA struck down in federal court, with nothing to replace it. The ACA, often known as “Obamacare,” provides protection to far more than the 20 million Americans who purchase health insurance for themselves and their families on federal or state exchanges such as Vermont Health Connect. Major provisions...
Here’s how to determine how far down the authoritarian rabbit hole we are as a country, and, on a local level, how far we each might be as individuals. On the national level, one simple test is to watch how the Republican Party responds to President Trump’s desire to silence and limit further national intelligence briefings on Russia’s ongoing efforts to once again help Trump win the upcoming election. As an individual, the test is what you believe: Do you think the nation’s intelligence agencies should brief both Houses of Congress in bipartisan fashion (that is, with Democrats and...
Having been a life-long Republican, I was very disappointed by our Republican Senators in the impeachment process. I am not a Trump supporter and never was. The way he treats people and insults Americans and our allies. The wall between Mexico and the United States, which he said Mexico was going to pay for. What a joke! The wall is being built with funds being raped from our military budget. The wall is NOT a military issue and its construction is destroying the environmental (human as well as animal) balance along its corridor. What a horrendous nightmare for all, this wall has become. It...
“There you go again” was a phrase used by Reagan against Carter in the 1980 debates and is apropos today regarding Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee. Even after the Mueller Report was released, Schiff still insisted that there was “ample evidence of collusion in plain sight” between President Trump and Russia to sway the 2016 presidential election. The 448-page Mueller Report outlined an investigation, which lasted 675 days, employed 19 attorneys, “issued more than 2,800 subpoenas, executed nearly 500 search warrants, obtained more than 230 orders for communication...
