Guns reported stolen from Monkton home

MONKTON — Vermont state police are investigating the theft of several guns from a Monkton home. Troopers on Sunday responded to a home on Mountain Road where homeowners told police that someone had stolen several guns, scopes, tools and thousands of rounds of ammunition from their home.
The guns were a .50 caliber bolt-action sniper rifle, an M1 carbine, a 12-gauge shotgun, a 9mm Spectre pistol, a .45 caliber Ruger semi-automatic pistol and .300 Winchester Magnum rifle. The ammunition stolen was an assortment of those calibers.
The investigating trooper, Kyle Young, said the home was unoccupied and unlocked at the time of the theft, which occured overnight between Saturday and Sunday. Young said the firearms were locked in a gun safe, which was damaged during the burglary. Young said the investigation has just begun, but did not rule out that the house may have been targeted for its arsenal.
The thefts were the latest in a number of burglaries in northern Addison County this year, many of which remain unsolved. Young said he believes troopers have solid leads in several of those cases.
Police ask anyone with information to call the New Haven barracks of the Vermont State Police at 388-4919.
