Kevin Ruelle paints Vermont travel posters

BURLINGTON ARTIST KEVIN Ruelle paints his Vermont travel posters en plein air. See Ruelle’s work in “Vermont Art Deco” on view at Art on Main in Bristol now through Columbus Day.

BRISTOL — Art on Main in Bristol has a new exhibit on view, featuring work from Burlington-artist Kevin Ruelle. Ruelle has created a series of faux vintage travel posters inspired by Vermont’s unique tourist past: nostalgic, not only in theme but also in the way they were painted, traditional airbrush and watercolor.
The owner of Ruelle Design & Illustration for over 30 years, located in Burlington, this artist specializes in technical illustrations, book illustrations, packaging art, illustrated maps, cartooning, and decorative art. Other works include impressionist landscapes from New England, the Southwest and Mexico.
Ruelle’s inspiration for this exhibit on view in Bristol comes from the art deco painters and designers of the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s who used the poster as a medium to showcase travel destinations. At that time, a relatively small number of posters could be strategically placed at train stations, travel agencies, and docks with significant effect. Ruelle creates all new, original compositions and uses the palette, dry brush technique and washes plus airbrushed tonality that make the period memorable. Come and see how Vermont looks in this quintessentially American genre. “Vermont Art Deco” will be on view through Columbus Day.
Art on Main is located at 25 Main Street in Bristol. Fall hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. For more info call (802) 453-4032 or visit artonmain.net.
