Letter to the editor: Bevere earns endorsement in race for state’s attorney

I write to urge you to vote for Peter Bevere to be the next State’s Attorney for Addison County. After I served as a prosecutor in New York City for nearly nine formative years, my family and I moved to Vermont, and until recently, we spent much of the last three years living in Middlebury. I had the pleasure of knowing Peter professionally and personally while working in Rutland together. Peter is a capable and experienced prosecutor, a man of decency and integrity, and a person with a demonstrated commitment to both Middlebury and Addison County.
During his professional development, Peter and his wife, Kelly, started a family and bought a home in Middlebury, where the Beveres have lived since 2003. Peter is clearly invested in Addison County, and he often provided me with good and practical advice about the area, whether it was a car maintenance recommendation or an idea of where to take my infant daughter on a Saturday. I am confident that Peter’s intimate knowledge of Addison County that comes from his years of residency in the community will enhance his capabilities as the State’s Attorney. I was actually surprised to learn that it was not a legal requirement for an elected State’s Attorney to be a resident of the county they serve. It is obvious that the community will benefit from Peter’s close connection to Addison County.
Peter benefits from the crucial experience and training he obtained as a prosecutor in Massachusetts. In a resource-challenged state, where prosecution training and development is often both sporadic and unfocused, out-of-state training and experience is an asset that prepares the Vermont prosecutor for the best possible outcome. Addison County would be well served by his specialties in prosecuting felonies, domestic violence and sexual offenses.
Peter had a steadying effect on my own adjustment to the Vermont criminal justice system. I saw junior level prosecutors and interns frequently seek out his mentorship, which is understandable given Peter’s general affability and calm demeanor. In the courtroom, I have seen Peter skillfully try very difficult and important cases, including sexual offenses involving children or intellectually disabled victims because he knows that all victims deserve to be heard. I was often impressed with his results.
This November, Addison County has an opportunity to elect a member of its own community with rare and invaluable prosecutorial experience and skills accumulated over the course of a career largely dedicated to public service and public safety. Peter Bevere exudes decency and professionalism, and the community would be well served by electing him State’s Attorney.
