Porter Hospital has created a (DEI) Council to “help create a more just, welcoming and responsive place for people of all colors, nationalities and religions to work and receive health care services” (Addison Independent March 4).  They have even hung a flag stating Black Lives Matter and will be incorporating signage in Spanish for non-native speakers. I admire these efforts, but think they should go a bit further. They also address the disparities that the LGBTQ have experienced in health care. I too am a Vermonter, with family in VT before it became a state. However, I must take issue with last week’s letters re: Trump and Republicans. (Addison Independent, Nov. 19, “GOP’s evolution has become threat to our way of life”). As you may recall, many of us were originally Republicans, but today's Republican Party is not the same as our parents’ Republican Party. I now consider myself a GDI, or gosh darn independent. I must admit my displeasure at the upcoming closure of a popular hiking trail for three months! Why must this closure by the U.S. Dept. of Forestry take three months to rehab? I understand that there are wooden bridges that need to be replaced and added to, but why not ask for volunteers? Or use the local hiking clubs in the area? Is it due to the slow moving wheels of our federal government? or to allow for a four-day work week? Why close all of it? Could it be possible to close only the section being worked on so that other parts could be used? There are other trails that branch off from...
