UPDATED MIDDLEBURY — Police are looking for men suspected of being involved with armed robberies in Middlebury and Shoreham on Monday evening. Middlebury police are searching for a man who robbed the Jolley Shortstop gas station at knifepoint in Middlebury just before midnight on Monday, Aug. 9. According to Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley, the suspect is described as being white, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with slender build with dark hair, wearing jeans covered in paint, a long-sleeved white shirt and a bandana across his face. MIDDLEBURY — Folks walking past the Middlebury police station off Seymour Street during the night of Jan. 12-13 caught an unusual and disturbing sight. A woman camped out in a snow bank, just a few feet away from warmth, nourishment and companionship. It’s not that police were oblivious to her presence; they repeatedly offered her food, shelter, cellphone service and/or transportation to a place of her choice. But the woman, suffering from mental illness, rebuffed all offers of aid. Moreover, her mental health issues did not rise to the level of qualifying her for an emergency evaluation by...
VERMONT — In the wake of Tuesday’s announcement by Middlebury College that it would revoke Rudy Giuliani’s 2005 honorary degree, the Middlebury Police Department and the college public safety officials are on alert and “keeping the lines of communication open” in case there is a backlash against the campus community, said MPD Chief Tom Hanley Tuesday afternoon. Middlebury revoked Giuliani’s degree for his role in inciting the violence that occurred last Wednesday, Jan. 6, when supporters of President Trump and right-wing extremists who refuse to accept that Trump lost the 2020 election...
MIDDLEBURY — Brandon resident Bashiru Abdulaziz on Sept. 3 met up with the two Middlebury police officers who had ordered him to “raise your hands” during their investigation of a false report they’d received about an armed Black man detaining a woman at gunpoint off Mary Hogan Drive on June 22. This was an opportunity for the officers and Abdulaziz to metaphorically shake hands and chart a new path for community policing. As previously reported by the Independent, Abdulaziz was approached by Middlebury Police Officers Bill Austin and Jared Harrington and a police dog at the town recreation...

Chief Tom Hanley
MIDDLEBURY — In his Emergency Management update to the Middlebury selectboard Tuesday evening, Police Chief Tom Hanley reported that a supply of cloth masks provided by the state is now available to Middlebury businesses for customer use. Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) Director Karen Duguay is the point of contact for distribution. Hanley said the police department will also be distributing masks to local childcare facilities to supplement their own supplies and that masks are available to the general public. Citizens may simply stop by the PD facility at 1 Lucius Shaw Lane to request a...
We have many treasures here in Middlebury. One of them is the Addison Independent, which Stephen Terry rightly praised so highly in his Community Forum column April 30. Another treasure is Tom Hanley, Middlebury Police Chief and Emergency Management Director during this crisis. Almost daily, Chief Hanley writes and circulates Emergency Management Bulletins. These are not only highly informative; they are also extremely well written, with literary references, fresh metaphors and always a touch of humor. Humor is especially welcome these days! For those of you who don’t already receive these...
