Middlebury Police Log: 73-year-old man found dead in parked car

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a report of an unresponsive man inside of a vehicle parked off Route 7 North on Jan. 13.
Middlebury Regional EMS took the man to Porter Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The man has been identified as Clarence C. Miller, 73, of Morrisville.
Police said there were no signs of foul play, and they believe the death was due to a medical episode.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Issued a no-trespass order to a homeless woman who was allegedly causing a disturbance at a North Pleasant Street residence on Jan. 12.
•  Served a temporary restraining order on a juvenile in the Buttolph Drive area on Jan. 13.
•  Received a report that a man driving a white Chevy pickup had abandoned a dog on Court Street on Jan. 13.
•  Responded to the reported theft of some money from a Shannon Street residence on Jan. 13.
•  Assisted Middlebury Union High School officials with an out-of-control student on Jan. 13. Police held the student until picked up by a parent.
•  Responded to a noise complaint at a Court Street apartment building on Jan. 13.
•  Received a complaint on Jan. 14 from a local man about a stolen vehicle. The complainant told police the vehicle had been stolen sometime last November. Authorities learned the vehicle had been towed and subsequently sold to another person. Police continue to investigate the matter.
•  Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with a woman believed to be having a seizure on Elm Street on Jan. 14.
•  Received a report of the theft of some ski boots and poles from a Main Street residence on Jan. 14.
•  Were informed of the theft of an unspecified amount of money from Carol’s Hungry Mind Café on Merchants Row on Jan. 14.
•  Responded on Jan. 14 to the reported theft of an iPad from a South Street home sometime on Jan. 9 or 10.
•  Placed a drunken woman into protective custody after investigating a noise complaint in the Seminary Street area on Jan. 15.
•  Investigated a report of some juveniles smoking marijuana under the rail overpass at Merchants Row on Jan. 15. Police found no one in that area.
•  Received a report about the theft of a bike on Main Street on Jan. 15. Police said the bike was found further up the street.
•  Took a North Pleasant Street man into custody on Jan. 16 after learning that he was wanted on a warrant for a psychological examination. Police said the man became violent and actively resisted before being taken into custody.
•  Received a report from the Counseling Service of Addison County about a client who had allegedly been acting in a threatening manner in the Main Street area on Jan. 16.  Police said CSAC officials are pursuing an effort to have the man committed.
•  Cited a drunken man for urinating in public on Main Street on Jan. 16.
•  Received a report from Middlebury College Public Safety about a missing visitor to the campus on Jan. 16. Police said the visitor was located at Two Bothers Tavern.
•  Responded to an East Middlebury residence for a report of people knocking on the door and walking around the property on Jan. 17. Police said it turned out to be a group of kids from a neighboring house who were playing outside.
•  Checked on a man who had been sleeping in a parked car off Park Street on Jan. 17. Police turned the man over to a sober friend.
•  Checked on a woman reported missing from the Main Street area on Jan. 17. Police said the woman was found at a relative’s house with a dead cell phone.
•  Assisted a confused Middlebury College student in finding his home on Jan. 18.
•  Returned a cell phone that a woman had lost in the Middlebury Beef Supply parking lot on Jan. 18.
•  Provided a ride for a man who had been drinking at a picnic table at Shaw’s Supermarket off Washington Street on Jan. 18.
•  Responded to a two-vehicle crash in the Middlebury Beef Supply parking lot off Route 7 South on Jan. 18. Police said no one was hurt in the accident.
•  Referred, to Vermont State Police, a report of a person allegedly impersonating a police officer on Jan. 18.
•  Cited Maximilian Hoffman, 23, of Lake Forest, Ill., for violating the town’s open container law on Weybridge Street on Jan. 18.
•  Investigated, at the request of an Essex County, Mass., police department, an allegation on Jan. 19 that a Springside Road resident had made three 911 call hang-ups. Local police could find no address matching that of the alleged 911 caller.
