Addison County State’s Attorney, Sheriff, High Bailiff condemn Trump’s attempted coup

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County State’s Attorney Dennis Wygmans, Sheriff Peter Newton, and High Bailiff (-elect) Dave Silberman released the following statement on January 7:

Yesterday, at the urging of President Donald J. Trump, a violent mob attempted to overthrow the United States Congress in order to prevent it from carrying out its Constitutional duty to certify the valid election of President-elect Joseph Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Yesterday’s events were the culmination of a months’-long effort by President Trump and his collaborators to override the will of the people, and the laws of the United States of America, in order to illegitimately remain in power.

The reprehensible conduct of President Trump, and those who stormed the US Capitol for his cause is a frontal assault on the rule of law, undermine the foundational principle of our nation: that government derives its just powers from the consent of the governed.

Additionally, we are disturbed by what appears to be either pure malfeasance in service to protect our nation, or a double standard in how federal law enforcement responded to the storming of the capitol versus the forceful manner in which these same agencies responded to those exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights of expression on issues ranging from disability rights to racial equality.

We demand that all those responsible for this attempted coup be held accountable under the law. We are concerned that if this aggression goes unchecked it will only serve to embolden further acts of insurrection as well as further the coordinated misinformation campaign that led to yesterday’s attempt at undermining the underpinnings of our nation. We can only turn the page on this ugly chapter in our nation’s history if justice is served.

In the United States of America, no one is above the law.
