Ash tree training session set for Oct. 15

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Conservation Commission, town road foreman and town tree warden are hosting a state-provided training session on Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ferrisburgh Town Center, for volunteers willing to participate in the town’s upcoming Roadside Ash Inventory.

After the training, small teams will be assigned to specific town roads to identify ash trees. Teams will conduct the inventory on their own schedule using smartphones or a limited number of iPads loaned by the state. The goal is to identify all ash trees along town roads so they can then be evaluated by the town road crew for the degree of hazard they present to town roads when the Emerald Ash Borer arrives.

The town invites anyone interested to join in this important tree inventory. Experience or proficiency in tree identification is not required, just a willingness to learn and participate in one of the inventory teams.

For more information contact Craig Heindel, chair of the Conservation Commission, at cheindel@gmavt.net   or contact Joe Nelson, leader of the town’s ash tree inventory effort, at JWNelson.pc@gmail.com.
