MONKTON — On Town Meeting Day, incumbent selectboard member Bill Martin won another three-year term on the board. He ran unopposed.
In a contested race to fill the seat vacated by longtime selectboard member Ann Layne, Paul Low defeated Robert Fogg, 520–244, for a two-year term.
Incumbent William Joos defeated Joshua Giard, 519–229, for delinquent tax collector.
The positions elected were: town moderator, Kenneth Wheeling; town clerk, Sharon Gomez; town treasurer, William Joos; lister, John Howard; constable, Charles Huizenga Sr.; planning commission, Wendy Sue Harper and Marilyn Cargill; and Russell Memorial Library Trustee, Theresa Schwegel and Ann Marie Dingler.
Dawn Griswold, an incumbent running unopposed, won a three-year term on the Mount Abraham Unified School District board.
Also on Town Meeting Day, Monkton voters, along with MAUSD voters from four other towns, approved a $31,399,182 budget for the coming school year, 2,391–1,611, with all ballots commingled.
They also approved the creation of a Capital Reserve Fund, to be initially funded with $610,118 of the district’s audited fund balance existing on June 30, 2018.
At Saturday’s town meeting at the Monkton Central School, voters approved:
•  $1,072,514 in highway spending.
•  $337,718 for salaries and general expenses.
•  $161,347 for capital funds and voter appropriations.
Voters also approved the 2020–2028 Monkton Town Plan, which includes an Enhanced Energy Plan.
When asked to consider supporting the distribution of natural gas in part of the Village District as per the Memo of Understanding signed by Vermont Gas Systems in June 2013, voters on Saturday chose to put the question off for at least another year, pending the results of ongoing investigations into pipeline safety violations.
On Tuesday, they voted 520–382 in favor of a proposed $1.7 million bond for the construction of a new municipal building. This was the fourth such bond proposed over the past decade.
Now that the bond has passed, construction could get under way as soon as this August, planners said.
In Monkton, 704 ballots were cast in the Democratic Presidential Primary and 181 ballots were cast in the Republican Presidential Primary. Bernie Sanders came out on top in the Democratic race with 383 votes. He was followed by Joe Biden, 153 votes; Elizabeth Warren, 73; Mike Bloomberg, 62; Tulsi Gabbard, 10; Pete Buttigieg and Andrew Yang, 8 each; Amy Klobuchar, 5; and Deval Patrick and Mark Stewart, 1 each. For the Republicans it was Donald Trump, 168, and Bill Weld, 13.
