Vergennes Lions Club gives out dictionaries
VERGENNES — Continuing the tradition started three years ago, the Vergennes Lions Club last week delivered student dictionaries to third- and fourth-graders at Addison Central School, and third-graders at the Champlain Valley Christian School and Vergennes Union Elementary School.
Most students immediately started reading bios of all past U.S. presidents, looking at the American Sign Language pages, challenging each other on the spelling of words, and dozens of other items of interest in the Student Dictionary. Teachers have often commented on how much the children look forward to learning things they find in the dictionaries. The principals and teachers in all three schools thanked the Lions for continuing the donation of dictionaries to the students.
With the dictionaries distributed, the Vergennes Lions are now selling “Cash for Christmas” 50/50 raffle tickets to help them fund their many community service projects. Tickets are $10 for one, $20 for three and $40 for eight. People interested in purchasing tickets can call 802-355-1969, or send a check with name, address and phone number to Vergennes Lions Club, PO Box 94, Vergennes, VT 05491, specifying how many tickets for each.
Soon, the Lions will be starting their annual Toys for Kids Drive to collect toys for children of needy families. People are encouraged to watch for the large barrels at various locations in the Vergennes area.
On Nov. 13, the Lions Club will be holding an Open House at the Vergennes Opera House from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for people to come in and see what the club has been working on the past 65 years. There will be refreshments served and door prizes awarded at the end of the evening.
The saying goes, “Where there is a need, there is a Lion.” The club is looking for more Lions to help meet the needs in our communities, and they hope folks will come and visit for a few minutes or an hour or more on Nov. 13.
