VUHS student named DAR good citizen

BEN CURTIS

VERGENNES — Ben Curtis, a senior at Vergennes Union High School and recent Student of the Week, has been chosen for this year’s DAR Good Citizenship award. Each year a Vergennes Union High School senior is chosen for the award. Faculty members nominate three seniors and then the senior class elects one of those three as their Good Citizen. The award recognizes a student that possesses the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism to an outstanding degree.
Curtis has a long history of excellent academic work, taking AP classes and college level courses. He has also been inducted into the National Honor Society. Because of his leadership skills, he was chosen to participate in Green Mountain Boys’ State this past summer.
Curtis is recognized for his ability to connect with others, whether on the basketball court or in his roll as a tutor for his peers at VUHS. His courtesy and respect for others is evident to all.
Ben’s math teacher, Lynn Kayhart, says, “Ben Curtis is a mathematician. He has exhausted our math courses at VUHS and now attends Middlebury College for Calculus 2, where he thrives. His inquisitive nature and determination means he continues to challenge himself and ask deep questions.”
After graduation, Ben plans to go to college to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He’s already looking for possible internships to get job experience and set himself up for success after college. His Good Citizen Award also opens up the opportunity for him to apply for a DAR scholarship to help him with his college plans.
Ben Curtis is the son of Jay and Amy Curtis of Vergennes.
