MIDDLEBURY — The “Yellow House Community” an intentional, residential community in Middlebury based at 29 Seminary St. in a beautiful, historic yellow house, was recently approved for state licensure as a Therapeutic Community Residence. YHC provides adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities with safe, residential family households, meaningful vocation, and the support needed to continue developing skills, interests, and relationships.

The Yellow House Community was founded by two local families, Andrea and Chris Murray and Kristen and Joe Brown, planning for the future of their adult children with special needs. It has become an opportunity to design a future for these young adults, and others in the community, that is full of love, joy, and purpose and that extends beyond what families can offer in their homes after aging out of the school system and after they are no longer alive.

YHC anticipates  residents will begin to move in this fall. In the meantime, now that they have their TCR license, YHC can officially advertise for residents. In addition to accepting and reviewing applications to find the right fit for residency, YHC needs to hire their live-in staff.

Executive Director Elise Haydon will lead a discussion and information session about Yellow House Community on Thursday, March 5, from 6:30-8 p.m., in the Community Room at Ilsley Public Library, 75 Main St. Families of prospective residents, aspiring staff members and volunteers, and interested community members are encouraged to attend. For more details, please email Haydon at ehyellowhouse@gmail.com.
