Police: Five embezzled at Middlebury Maplefields

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Tuesday cited five people for embezzlement following an investigation suggesting each person had allegedly stolen money and/or scratch-off Vermont Lottery tickets from the Maplefields store at 60 North Pleasant St.
Cited for embezzlement were Brittany Aunchman, 24, of Vergennes; Ashlee Hathorn, 23, of Salisbury; Samantha Selby, 29, of Middlebury; Natasha Doolan, 22, of Middlebury; and Anthony Field, 18, of Leicester.
A press release issued Tuesday by Middlebury police indicates a Maplefields employee reported in June that a storewide audit had shown discrepancies in store receipts and lottery tickets.
Middlebury Police Officer Bill Austin headed the investigation that uncovered “several thousand dollars” in missing funds and tickets, according to police officials.
The five suspects in the case are scheduled to answer to the embezzlement charges in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, on Jan. 7.
